Chapter 561 Playing Dead After Crashing
"No way, Mr. Melville! Scarlett's head over heels for you. She'd do anything, seriously," Alice pleaded.
Hearing the ruckus outside, Katherine got up to check it out. She saw Alice on her knees, crying in front of Alex, begging for Scarlett.
Katherine squinted. Sometimes, Alice just didn't get it. Why did she think begging Alex would work?
Alex stood there, stone-cold, looking down at her with pure indifference and disgust. "Mrs. Mitchell, Scarlett's in this mess because of her own actions. Unless she confesses and repents, no one can help her."
Alice cried a bit more, but when she realized it was pointless, she wiped her tears and switched gears, "If you're gonna be so heartless, Mr. Melville, then give me back my Charles!"
Alex raised an eyebrow, all sarcastic, "Give him back? He's my legally adopted son. Why should I hand him over to you?"
Alice stood up, dusted herself off, and said confidently, "Mr. Melville, you were just doing Scarlett a favor by adopting Charles abroad. You both agreed that once Charles was adopted, he'd be Scarlett's alone. You wouldn't have any responsibility or custody! Isn't that right?"
Charles didn't get much of the convo, but sensing Alice's vibe, he felt the danger and clung tightly to Alex's clothes, scared Alex would hand him over to his grandma.
Alex patted Charles's back to calm him and replied to Alice, "Mrs. Mitchell, you're right. Your daughter pretended to be my savior and forced me to adopt this child with her. We did agree on Charles's custody. But everything has to follow the law. Now that Charles's adoptive mom is in prison, I'm the legal guardian. It's not up to you, the so-called grandma, is it?"
Alice knew she was in the wrong but still didn't want to let go of Charles as a bargaining chip. "That's true! But Mr. Melville, you're a man and don't know how to take care of a kid. It'd be better if I, his grandma, took care of him!"
"He might not know how to take care of a kid, but I can help!" Katherine strolled over and stood beside Alex.
Alice was stunned for a moment. "You help? You're a stepmom. How good can you be to Charles?"
Katherine smiled lightly, "Even if I'm a stepmom, Alice isn't his biological mom either! And it's obvious Charles doesn't want to go with you, Mrs. Mitchell. Can't you see that? If you and Alice truly cared for Charles, he wouldn't be clinging to Alex like this, would he?"
Alice was speechless and glared at Katherine, "I'm discussing Charles's matters with his adoptive father. It has nothing to do with you! Stay out of it!"
"If she can't interfere, can I?" Bernard, leaning on crutches, walked over slowly, "You insist on keeping Charles with you. Do you really have the ability to take good care of him?"
Alice was genuinely surprised to see Bernard and immediately lost some of her steam, "Bernard, you're here?"
Bernard, leaning on his crutches, stopped beside Katherine. "Alice, Grandfather sent you here to reflect on your actions. But it seems to me you have no intention of doing so. What can you teach Charles here?"
Alice was always a bit scared of Bernard, "But Charles is Scarlett's kid, my grandson."
Bernard sneered, "You've already taught Scarlett to end up in prison. What do you plan to teach Charles? Do you think our family would agree to let you take care of him? Even if Grandparents agreed, I would never let you ruin Charles!"
"You all are pushing me to the edge! Scarlett's been taken away, and without Charles, what's the point of living? I might as well die!" Alice, unable to argue, started to act hysterical and rushed towards a nearby pillar.
Seeing this, the family servants freaked out and rushed to stop her.
But Bernard said sternly, "Don't stop her; let her hit it!"
Hearing the order, the servants who were about to rush forward stopped and stepped back.
Bernard sneered, "I want to see if someone who can't let go of wealth and luxury would really dare to die!"
Seeing no one coming to stop her, Alice was in a dilemma. She slowed down and lightly bumped into the pillar, then pretended to faint.
Seeing this, Bernard nodded and signaled Billy to check.
Billy checked Alice's breathing and then stood up to report, "Sir, she's fine, just fainted."
Bernard showed a trace of disgust, "Alright, someone take her back to her room. Don't let her embarrass herself here!"
Several servants responded and carried the pretending-to-faint Alice away.
Bernard then addressed the remaining servants, "Don't worry, she won't die. From now on, no matter what she does, ignore her."
The servants responded in unison, "Yes."
Then Bernard turned to Katherine, "Katherine, did that scare you?"
Katherine shrugged, "Nah."
Bernard smiled wryly, "That's good. Don't mind her. Shall we go back and continue breakfast?"
Katherine waved her hand, "No need! I don't have much of an appetite now. Mr. Mitchell, you eat more. I'll go back to the room with Alex."
Bernard wanted to chat more with Katherine, but since she said so, he couldn't insist. He nodded gently, "Alright, go ahead."
Katherine turned to Alex, "Let's go."
Alex, holding Charles, followed Katherine back to the room.
Not long after returning to the room, Charles fell asleep, probably because he knew he wouldn't be abandoned. He slept soundly.
Alex, exhausted from the overnight flight, also dozed off beside Charles.
Katherine looked at the sleeping pair on the bed, her eyes unconsciously softening.
Although she still had some resentment towards Alex, she couldn't deny her concern for him. She walked over and gently covered both Alex and Charles with a blanket.
