Chapter 117 Katherine Fell Off the Cliff

At the edge of the cliff, Sugar was still pacing and whinnying mournfully at the cliff's edge.

A piece of torn red fabric, clearly from Katherine's riding outfit, was hanging from a rock at the edge of the cliff.

Alex pulled his horse to a stop, dismounted swiftly, and walked quickly to the edge of the cliff. His sharp eyes scanned the bottom, but he couldn't see anything.

Behind him, the sound of hurried hoofbeats approached and then stopped.

Hilton, Issac, and Jonathan had arrived. They dismounted and looked at the ominous scene at the cliff's edge, exchanging glances but saying nothing.

Hilton, dropping his usual flippant demeanor, stepped forward and solemnly patted Alex on the shoulder. "Alex, my condolences."

Alex's face was grave, and he said nothing.

Condolences?

Condolences for what?

Alex turned his head, looking at Hilton with a serious and calm expression. "I'm going down to check. You guys call the rescue team immediately!"

With that, he turned around, took a climbing rope from the saddle of his black horse, swung it, and hooked it onto a tree at the edge of the cliff. He then tied it around himself, preparing to go down and search for her.

Seeing this, Issac grabbed Alex's arm and advised, "Alex, calm down."

Hilton also stepped in to stop him. "Alex, we don't even know what the terrain is like down there. You can't go down!"

Jonathan walked slowly to the edge of the cliff, bent down, and picked up the piece of red fabric hanging on the rock, sighing sadly. "What a pity, Katherine was so young..."

Alex's eyes darkened as he shook off Issac's hand. "Why aren't you calling the rescue team yet?"

"Alex!" Issac called out.

At this moment, Teresa, Sunny, and Sophie also arrived on horseback. Unfortunately, before they could get close, they saw Alex leap off the edge of the cliff.

Sophie widened her eyes in shock and shouted, "Alex, no! "

Teresa was also frightened. "Alex!"

"Alex!" Sunny urged her horse to speed up and rushed over.

But Alex's figure had already disappeared over the edge of the cliff.

At the cliff's edge, Teresa immediately jumped off her horse, ran forward, and looked down in despair, bursting into tears. "Alex is committing suicide!"

Sunny, who had been quite anxious, saw Teresa's foolish reaction and frowned, irritably reminding her, "Alex went down with a rope. He wouldn't be so brainless as to jump off to his death!"

Teresa sniffled, stopped crying, blinked blankly, and looked around. Sure enough, she saw the rope hooked onto the tree and finally breathed a sigh of relief. "You're right! I hope Alex can bring Katherine back safe and sound."

Sunny took a pack of tissues from his pocket and tossed it to her disdainfully. "Blow your nose, it's disgusting!"

Teresa rolled her eyes at him, picked up the tissues, and cried while saying, "I'm not disgusting!"

Meanwhile, Sophie was too shocked to speak, standing dazedly at the edge of the cliff. She never expected that Alex would risk his life to go down the cliff to find Katherine!

Was Katherine that important to him?

Would Alex give up his life for Katherine?

Then what about Scarlett?

At the bottom of the cliff, it was dark, damp, and overgrown with weeds.

The rope wasn't long enough, leaving a significant distance to the bottom. He pushed off the rock wall with his foot, swinging his body, and then untied the rope, landing steadily!

The noise of Alex landing startled a swarm of bats. Alex stood up, brushed off the thorns and wild grass clinging to him, and began to scan the surroundings with sharp eyes.

The environment at the bottom of the cliff was harsh and unpromising.

However, there was no sign of Katherine anywhere!

He had to find her, dead or alive!

Furrowing his brows, he pushed aside layers of weeds, carefully searching for Katherine...

Suddenly, a dark shadow lunged at him from behind!

Alex, sensing the movement, turned and kicked, sending a snarling brown bear tumbling to the ground with a howl.

The bear, seemingly starving, glared at him with glowing eyes, and after a brief pause, it got up and attacked the man again!

Alex, strong and agile, effortlessly knocked the bear down again in just a few moves. The immediate danger was averted!

However, the appearance of the brown bear made Alex realize the gravity of the situation. There were large predators at the bottom of the cliff!

Katherine was nowhere to be seen—could she have been eaten?

The thought of this possibility made Alex's eyes turn blood-red. He pulled a small hunting rifle from his waistband and aimed it at the bear's head.

The bear, as if sensing its impending doom, had no strength to escape and was left trembling.

"Alex, don't shoot the bear!" Katherine's loud voice suddenly echoed through the valley, bringing an ethereal resonance.

Alex's pupils contracted as he quickly turned towards the source of the voice. He saw Katherine standing not far away, her face dirty, hair disheveled, and clothes tattered.

Despite her disheveled appearance, Katherine seemed to be in good spirits.

Katherine stepped over some weeds and vines on the ground and walked towards Alex. "Alex, you..."

Before she could finish her sentence, Alex strode over and pulled her into a tight embrace!

Her words were cut off, and her head was pressed so firmly against his chest that she could hardly breathe!

Struggling to lift her head from his chest, Katherine earnestly explained, "Alex, that bear is an endangered species. Killing it is illegal!"

Alex, confirming that Katherine was alright, gradually relaxed his tense muscles. He looked down at her and said, "Humans can defend themselves against protected animals in the wild. Understand?"

"Alright!" Katherine pouted. "By the way, Alex, why did you come down here?"

Alex frowned slightly, looking at her with a hint of exasperation. "What do you think?"

Katherine, with a look of disdain, complained, "I didn't actually fall. I was hanging on a crooked tree on the cliff, waiting for rescue! But then I saw you coming down with a rope. I called out to you, but you didn't hear me! So I had to jump down to find you, and it hurt a lot!"

Alex's brow furrowed as he gripped her shoulders, his eyes scanning her body with concern. "Where did you get hurt?"

Katherine waved her hand dismissively. "I'm fine! Just tore my clothes!"

Alex looked at her intently. "If you didn't fall initially, why did you jump down when you saw me coming?"

"Because..." Katherine almost blurted out but then held back, realizing the reason might be misunderstanding.

Alex narrowed his eyes, looking at her intently. "Because of what? Hmm?"

Feeling uncomfortable under Alex's gaze, Katherine turned her face away and huffed. "For the same reason you came down!"

Alex paused, then chuckled softly.

Relieved, Alex's gaze softened as he looked at her dirty face. He placed a large hand on her head, ruffling her messy hair, and said with satisfaction, "Hmm, not a foo. You know to worry about your husband's safety!"

Katherine didn't want to say another word.
