Chapter 300 Claire, You're Back!
Edwin felt eyes on him. Glancing around, his expression froze for a moment.
He noticed a girl about his daughter Scarlett's age. He appeared lost in thought, perhaps reminiscing, but quickly looked away and headed for the door.
Katherine didn't track him with her eyes. Her complex expression eventually settled into calmness.
Edwin had once hurt and betrayed her mother, leading her to leave home with Katherine when she was young. That's why Mr. Ayers despised him!
As for Katherine, she had no memories of her biological father, not even a vague one. A heartless man like him probably didn't care for her much, so there was nothing worth remembering!
"Claire!"
Katherine was lost in thought when suddenly a pair of old hands grabbed her tightly!
Startled, she looked up to see an older woman.
The woman looked at her with concern. "Claire, why are you coming home so late after school? Where did you go to play again?"
Katherine was taken aback. "Ma'am, I think you have mistaken me for someone else."
The old woman didn't seem to hear her and continued, "Claire, you must not come home so late again. You'll worry your parents!"
Hearing her mother-in-law call out the name Claire, Ediwn, who had reached the door, suddenly stopped and looked back. He saw Mrs. Ayers holding the hand of the distinguished-looking girl and talking.
Katherine said helplessly, "Ma'am, you really have mistaken me for someone else. I'm not Claire!"
The kind old woman frowned and lectured, "Claire, stop being stubborn with your parents! You need to be obedient. You must not play with that boy from the Mitchell family! That boy looks like a heartless person, and you'll get hurt being with him!"
Edwin and Katherine both fell silent.
Katherine deduced her identity from her words. The older woman was Mrs. Ayers, her grandmother from the Ayers family.
It seemed her grandmother had mistaken her for her mother.
Claire was her mother's name.
Sunny came over and gently moved the elderly woman aside. "Grandma, you've mistaken her again. She's my friend, not Claire!"
The older woman shook her head, somewhat anxious and excited. "Claire! She is Claire. Claire has come back."
Sunny sighed. "Grandma, she really isn't!"
Mr. Ayers coughed heavily twice, then got up and walked over. "Aria, stop it, you're scaring the children!"
Aria looked at Mr. Ayers, her eyes filled with bitter tears. "Macus, it's Claire! Claire has come back, Claire has come back."
"Alright, alright, she's back, she's back!" Mr. Ayers said soothingly. He seemed used to this, walking over to support Aria by his side. Then he looked up at the young girl Aria was pointing at insistently and was stunned.
He thought, 'This... whose daughter is this, and why does she look so much alike!'
Katherine blinked, feeling slightly uncomfortable under the intense gaze, and forced a dry smile.
Aria's eyes reddened, tears streaming down her face. "Macus, it's Claire! Look, it's really Claire who has come back."
Mr. Ayers snapped out of his reverie and sighed deeply. "I see, I see. Aria, you need to take your medicine. Come on, I'll take you to get it, and then we can come back to see Claire."
While comforting her, Mr. Ayers led Aria away, trying to calm her down.
Katherine watched the elderly couple walk away, feeling a mix of emotions.
Sunny sighed and explained, "My grandmother has Alzheimer's and often mistakes people."
Katherine nodded. "I understand."
Just then, Aria, who had walked some distance away, turned back to look at Katherine and asked, "Claire, what do you want for dinner tonight?"
Katherine felt a pang of emotion being mistaken for her mother. She thought for a moment, then smiled at Aria and replied, "I'll have my usual favorite!"
Aria smiled through her tears. "Alright! Chicken stew, Claire's favorite chicken stew! Mom will have Lucy Brown go out and buy some pork belly."
Mr. Ayers also turned back to look at Katherine meaningfully before supporting Aria upstairs to take her medicine.
Sunny, feeling somewhat troubled, continued to explain, "Grandma developed Alzheimer's after my father's first wife went missing. Her condition fluctuates. Did she scare you?"
Katherine shook her head. "No, it's fine."
"Sunny, who is this?"
Edwin, who was about to leave, returned, looking at Katherine with a complex expression, and asked Sunny.
Sunny was a bit surprised to see his father come back and replied, "Dad, she's my friend and also an employee at Bernard Company."
Edwin looked at Katherine, and Katherine looked back at him.
Katherine greeted, "Hello, Mr. Mitchell. My name is Katherine Galatea, and I currently work at Mr. Mitchell's company."
Her last name was Galatea? Edwin nodded slightly. "Hello."
Before leaving, Edwin took a deep look at Katherine. This girl's aura was very similar to that of his ex-wife Claire Ayers; it was no wonder his mother-in-law mistook her.
But she actually resembled his long-lost eldest daughter, Laura, even more.
However, his missing daughter Laura had a distinctive red birthmark on her forehead, which this girl did not have.
She just happened to bear a slight resemblance. How could she be his Laura? After all these years, the whole world couldn't find Laura's whereabouts. How could she just appear here?
Edwin said nothing more, just gave Sunny a few more instructions before turning to leave the Ayers family.
Katherine offered a faint smile.
Did Edwin, looking at her just now, also think of her long-lost mother?
Would a heartless man feel a twinge of guilt for the wife he betrayed?
Would he?
Katherine felt a chill as if a cold, sharp gaze was fixed on her.
She instinctively looked up and met Alex's deep, inscrutable eyes!
He stood there coldly, watching her, his gaze unreadable.
Scarlett was right beside him, yet he kept staring at another woman. Was it amusing?
At this moment, Mr. Ayers, supported by an old attendant, slowly walked down the stairs.
Macus's old but bright eyes looked at Katherine, scrutinizing her from head to toe. "Young lady, how old are you? What's your name?"
