Chapter 723 The Shareholders' Meeting
Katherine snapped back to reality, shook her head, and said, "It's nothing. After work, I'll go pick up the three kids from daycare. Are you coming with me, or are you heading home first?"
Without thinking, Fiona replied, "I'll go with you! I promised them that I'd treat them to pizza today!"
Katherine nodded slightly, then put down her bottle of water and waved her hand. "You go ahead. I still have work to do."
Fiona obediently nodded and left, closing the door to the CEO's office behind her.
As she walked out of the office, Fiona's expression turned gloomy.
Katherine really had it tough. She had to manage the company for Alex and take care of three kids, one of whom Alex adopted for special reasons. Katherine treated them all equally, without any favoritism.
And Alex, for the past three years, had vanished without a trace, as if he disappeared from the face of the earth.
The most important thing was that in these three years, Katherine had never thought about leaving the Melville family. She had been steadfastly taking care of the three kids.
In the past, she might have superficially thought that Katherine was doing this for the Melville family's fortune.
Now she didn't think that way at all!
Because she knew Katherine didn't lack money. Katherine was the largest shareholder of the Crescent Group and the biggest power behind the scenes. Even Ambrosia and Frank had to listen to her.
So, Katherine staying with the Melville family was only because of the missing Alex.
She found such deep loyalty rare. Others might say she was a young widow.
But Katherine had never lacked suitors around her, and she had never wavered.
As Fiona was lost in thought, a voice interrupted her. "Ms. Melville, what are you daydreaming about?"
Fiona snapped back to reality and saw that Jonathan had arrived!
Her face immediately darkened, full of hostility and vigilance. "Jonathan, what are you doing here?"
"I came to see Katherine. I heard she's hosting her first shareholders' meeting today, so I thought I'd show some support." Jonathan's naturally sinister face showed a warm smile, but Fiona didn't feel any warmth at all!
"Jonathan, everyone can see you have improper intentions towards Katherine!"
Jonathan shamelessly smiled. "So what? Can't I like Katherine?"
"No, you can't!" Fiona frowned and said firmly.
Jonathan was indifferent. "Why not?"
Fiona glared at him. "You know why not! She's a married woman! Do you think it's appropriate to have such thoughts about a married woman?"
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. "A married woman? Where's her husband?"
Fiona was at a loss of words.
Alex has been missing for three years, his fate unknown.
If only she knew where Alex was!
Jonathan smiled and moved closer to Fiona. "Ms. Melville, not to be rude, but don't you think the Melville family is being a bit selfish?"
Fiona frowned in displeasure. "How is the Melville family selfish?"
Jonathan's expression grew serious. "Alex has been missing for so many years with no word, and he and Katherine never officially married. Now you expect Katherine to stay tied to your family, raise the kids, and manage the company, without allowing her to move on with her life? Don't you think that's a bit unfair?"
Fiona knew he had a point. "Alex is just temporarily missing, not gone! He will come back one day!"
Jonathan smirked. "If he could come back, he would have by now! He wouldn't leave Katherine and the kids here, not caring at all, right?"
Fiona couldn't argue with Jonathan, so she stopped reasoning with him and blocked his way. "No matter what you say, it's useless! This is the Melville Group. If I don't let you in, you can't go in!"
Jonathan moved closer. "You won't let me in? Then I might have to use force."
Fiona wasn't afraid. "What? You think you can hit me on the Melville family's turf?"
Jonathan moved so close that she could feel his breath. "I won't hit you. If you won't let me pursue Katherine, maybe I'll pursue you instead. After all, you're getting prettier, and I don't mind changing my target."
As he spoke, he lifted Fiona's chin with his hand.
Fiona, who had someone she liked, was furious at Jonathan's touch and slapped his hand away in disgust. "Get lost! Why would I ever want you to pursue me?"
That slap made her instinctively step back.
Jonathan took this opportunity to open the door to the CEO's office and walked in.
By the time Fiona realized it, it was too late!
Katherine was busy typing on her keyboard. Hearing someone walk in without knocking, she thought it was Fiona again. "Why are you back? Is there something else?"
Jonathan smiled. "Katherine, busy?"
Hearing Jonathan's voice, Katherine's hands paused, and she looked up at him. "What are you doing here?"
Her tone and expression clearly showed she wasn't pleased to see him.
Jonathan was used to her cold reception. He pulled out the chair opposite her desk and sat down. "I came to see you. How did the meeting with the old shareholders of the Melville Group go? Did they give you a hard time?"
Katherine's eyes returned to the computer screen, and she answered nonchalantly, "It was fine; nothing too difficult."
Jonathan admired her dedication. "Katherine, seriously, are you really willing to stay with the Melville family and work for them for free?"
Katherine continued typing. "What do you mean? How am I working for free? I get paid for my work here."
Jonathan chuckled. "Have you ever seen a CEO of a big group who only gets a salary? Katherine, are you naive?"
Katherine was indifferent. "Do we really need to keep such strict accounts within the family?"
Hearing her say "family business," Jonathan frowned. "I'm afraid you're the only one who sees it that way. The Melville family probably doesn't think of you as one of their own."
Katherine glanced at him. "Really? How do you think they see it?"
Jonathan said, "Do you really want to hear my opinion?"
Katherine smiled. "You're here, aren't you? You want to talk, so go ahead. I'm listening."
Jonathan smiled. "Then I'll be blunt. I think the Melville family is just using you. They don't see you as part of the family."
Katherine raised an eyebrow. "What makes you say that?"
