Chapter 244 Could You Help Me Watch the Child?
Scarlett's eyes sparkled with an innocent, fawn-like quality.
"It won't be, Sophie. You're overthinking this. Katherine's actually pretty nice," she said.
"Nice? If she were truly nice, I wouldn't have ended up in jail!" Sophie sighed, worried about her naive friend.
"Scarlett, you're a mom now, but you still act like a kid, thinking everyone is good! It's really concerning!" Sophie added.
Scarlett smiled slowly, about to say more when they heard the bathroom door open.
They both stopped talking and turned to look at Bernard, who had just come out.
Bernard rolled up his sleeves as he walked over. "Scarlett, isn't it tiring to hold the baby like that? Why don't you sit down and rest?" he said gently.
Scarlett nodded, sat on the sofa with the little boy in her arms, and Sophie joined her there. She sweetly taught the child, "Charles, say 'uncle.' This is your Uncle Bernard!"
The little boy looked at Bernard with big, blinking eyes and obediently said, "Ankle..."
The adults laughed at his mispronunciation.
Scarlett corrected him. "It's 'uncle,' not 'ankle.'"
The little boy looked confused and tried again.
Scarlett, half-laughing, half-crying, said, "Charles, it's 'uncle!'"
The little boy, frustrated at not getting it right, furrowed his brows and tried hard again. "An...kle!"
Bernard patted Charles's chubby cheek affectionately. "Come on, Scarlett, he's just a little kid. You can't expect him to get it perfect."
Maybe it was fate, but if you looked closely, this adopted child did bear a slight resemblance to Scarlett.
However, Bernard didn't feel any familial affection towards the child; it was just a general adult sympathy for a little one.
Meanwhile, Sophie had already opened the lunchbox, setting out each dish and handing the utensils to Bernard. "Bernard, try it and see if you like it!"
"Thank you." Bernard accepted the utensils, took a bite, and nodded. "It tastes good."
Just a simple compliment from her crush made Sophie very happy. "If Bernard likes my cooking, I can make it for you every day!" she said.
Bernard politely declined. "No need to trouble yourself. I usually eat simple meals alone while working. You coming over would disrupt my work and waste your time."
Complimented and then rejected, Sophie felt an awkward mix of emotions.
"Bernard, I don't mind wasting time! But if it disrupts your work, I won't come over. Just let Scarlett tell me whenever you want to eat my cooking, and I'll make it for you right away!" Sophie insisted.
Bernard, eating, lazily responded with a noncommittal hum, polite yet distant throughout.
While eating, Bernard received a phone call and got up to leave.
Seeing Bernard leave, Sophie felt a bit worried. He had barely eaten a few bites. Did he not like her cooking this time?
Scarlett noticed Sophie's unease and gently patted her hand. "Sophie, he's always like that, often skipping meals for work. Don't overthink it."
Sophie nodded, feeling somewhat reassured.
Scarlett's eyes shifted slightly. "By the way, Sophie, tomorrow is my aunt's birthday party. Have you decided what dress to wear?"
Sophie was startled, realizing she had forgotten about it. "Scarlett, I remember Mrs. Gray's birthday party requires everyone to bring a partner, right? I wonder if Bernard has found a date for this year?"
Scarlett understood her friend's hint. "Don't worry, Sophie. With me around, Bernard's plus one has always been you, and this year won't be any different!"
Sophie smiled gratefully. "Scarlett, thanks for understanding me so well!"
Scarlett added, "But Sophie, you just got out of prison and probably haven't had time to buy a new dress, right? How about I go shopping with you now to get a beautiful dress for tomorrow? That way, Bernard will be amazed and moved by you!"
Sophie answered quickly, "That sounds great! But won't it be inconvenient to take Charles shopping with us?"
Scarlett then remembered the little boy in her arms, who was yawning and struggling to stay awake.
After a while...
Katherine was still busy translating documents when the door to the CEO's office opened, and Scarlett and Sophie walked out together.
Scarlett approached Katherine's desk and politely asked, "Katherine, Sophie and I need to go out for a bit. Could you please watch the baby for a bit?"
"Me?" Katherine looked up, puzzled, and formally refused. "Sorry, but watching children isn't part of my job."
Scarlett kindly pleaded, "It'll be quick. Sophie and I haven't seen each other in a long time and want to go shopping downstairs. I also need to pick up some things for the baby."
Katherine was indifferent. "Miss Mitchell, you can take your baby shopping with you or have your brother Bernard look after him. That would be preferable to leaving the child with me, a stranger."
Scarlett looked troubled. "But Charles is asleep, and Bernard is out. Besides, he is a man and doesn't know how to take care of a child!"
Katherine never stopped working and remained unmoved by Scarlett's pleas. "Me too. And I have work to complete with no spare time. I'm sorry, but I really can't help you."
"Alright, never mind then." Scarlett lowered her head in disappointment and sighed, turning to Sophie. "Sophie, it looks like I can't go with you to pick out a dress. Never mind. Maybe you should ask another friend to go with you."
"Never mind!?" Sophie couldn't stand Katherine's arrogant attitude. "Scarlett, Katherine is your family's employee. What right does she have to refuse your request!"
