Chapter 104 Worlds Apart
In this situation, there was only one explanation.
Alice had lied.
...
Natalie arrived home and carefully took off the formal dress she was wearing. She planned to send it to the dry cleaners tomorrow and find an opportunity to return it to Serena.
In the sanctuary of the bathroom, warm water cascaded over Natalie's face.
Her hand drifted towards her collarbone.
A telltale bite mark resided there. Despite her best efforts to conceal it with foundation, the mark remained faintly discernible.
Her fingertips quivered. Her eyes snapped open abruptly.
The scalding water infiltrated her eyes, igniting a pulsating discomfort.
The mark was a memento from Adrian, from that fateful night. The wound had bled, swollen, and eventually formed a scab. Once healed, it left behind this indelible mark.
Her fingertips trembled subtly. The area felt searing hot.
At the evening's banquet, there had been no exchange between them. The man appeared to exist on a pedestal, far beyond her reach. She was once again confronted with the chasm that separated them. They were never destined to inhabit the same world...
Natalie concluded her shower just as her phone chimed. It was Jagger.
She accepted the call.
Jagger's voice echoed with a hint of remorse, "I apologize for the late disturbance, Natalie. I just forgot to ask you, are you available tomorrow evening?"
"I have work commitments tomorrow evening," Natalie responded truthfully.
On the other end of the line, Jagger hesitated momentarily, then hastily added, "What about the day after? Are you free then?"
"I can do lunch the day after tomorrow. Dr. Kamel, is there something you require?"
"I wanted to extend an invitation to dinner, as a token of my gratitude for your help today. Why have you reverted to calling me Dr. Kamel?" Jagger didn't want to seem too distant.
"That's not necessary. I didn't contribute much."
"Natalie, I genuinely wish to take you out for a meal."
Natalie refrained from declining again and offered a smile, "Very well, I'll see you then."
...
At the Pearl Hotel, the celebratory banquet had concluded.
Melissa exited Ruben's lounge and suddenly recalled, "Where is Rachel? I haven't seen her all night."
Paul, standing beside her, replied, "She seemed to have joined a few ladies for a card game. I'm uncertain of her current location."
Melissa didn't dwell on it and instructed, "Paul, go find her. Once she's finished, make sure she gets home safely."
"You're well aware of her nature. She seldom indulges in such merriment, so let her enjoy. I'll arrange for a few people to wait for her here."
"Okay."
Melissa said, "My father has retired for the night. He'll rest here and you can escort him back to the Howard Villa tomorrow. I must leave now. If any issues arise, contact your second brother."
"Understood. Don't worry. I'll personally oversee the premises tonight."
Melissa acknowledged Paul with a nod. Paul glanced at her, a moment of hesitation crossing his features.
"Melissa..."
Melissa retrieved her phone, paused, and glanced at Paul, "Paul, is there something else?"
"It's nothing. I'll arrange for the driver to take you."
Melissa skimmed the text message on her phone. She exhaled a sigh. The message was from Daniel.
Today was Ruben's celebration banquet, yet Daniel was absent. His absence was becoming a source of concern for her.
Suddenly recalling Adrian's instructions prior to his departure, Melissa instructed, "Paul, I have an urgent matter to attend to tomorrow. Find someone reliable to accompany Alice for a medical check-up and see how the child is doing."
"Alright."
Paul watched as Melissa's figure receded into the distance. A faint fragrance lingered in the air. His expression was one of infatuation.
Once Melissa was out of sight, he turned to the person next to him and asked, "How is Ms. Cullen?"
"Ms. Cullen is still unconscious."
