Chapter 106 Meeting Again
The predicament at hand was not merely a question of theft. The attire of the young women present suggested they hailed from affluent families, and they were celebrating a birthday party here.
Denise had disrupted their jovial atmosphere, an indisputable misstep.
With gritted teeth, Denise was compelled to offer an apology, yet she staunchly refused to confess to the theft of the bracelet.
Shortly, an employee entered the room. "Ms. Nicholson," he announced, "Here are the screenshots from the surveillance footage. There's no evidence of Denise stealing anything."
Yet, this did not conclusively prove Denise's innocence in the matter of the missing bracelet.
The aggrieved party was Anna Baker. She claimed to have removed the bracelet and placed it in her bag while in the restroom. When Denise approached to refill drinks, two other young women were seated on the sofa, in close proximity to her bag.
The surveillance camera was programmed to rotate, capturing the entire room.
However, this rotation resulted in a few seconds of blind spot when it swiveled to the other side.
If the bracelet was stolen during these brief seconds, it would not have been captured on film.
Anna paused, letting the implication hang in the air.
Ironically, the two friends seated next to her were now visibly disgruntled. "Are you suggesting that I stole Anna's bracelet?" The woman, clad in Chanel, rose to her feet, her tone haughty. "What are you implying? Your own waiter is the thief, yet you're trying to slander Grace and me!"
Grace chimed in, "Exactly, I gifted that bracelet to Anna for her birthday. Why would I steal my own gift?"
This statement stirred Zoe's displeasure.
In those five seconds, Zoe and Grace were the closest to the bag. But given that the diamond bracelet was a gift from Grace, it was implausible that she would have taken it. Thus, the only suspects remaining were Zoe and the waiter, Denise.
Denise shot Zoe a glance, her teeth clenched.
Anna too, cast a glance at Zoe, her brow furrowed.
"Surely that's not possible?"
Under the scrutiny of all present, Zoe retorted, "Your own waiter is the prime suspect, yet you're trying to pin this on me? I'm not lacking in wealth." She seized Anna's hand, "Anna, let's call the police and let this waiter face the consequences!"
Denise swiftly turned to Melody.
Melody felt a surge of anxiety, realizing that the surveillance footage did not absolve Denise of suspicion.
Moreover, these two were young ladies of high society; it was unlikely they were the culprits.
As the situation grew more heated, Anna's bracelet was still missing. Until a resolution could be found, the dispute showed no signs of abating.
In desperation, Denise pleaded with Melody to clear her name. Just then, Susan and Natalie approached. Denise rushed towards them, "Natalie, Susan."
"It's you!"
Before Natalie could respond, a girl in a beige plaid dress seated on the sofa exclaimed excitedly, "Natalie, do you remember me?"
Natalie looked at the smiling Serena in surprise.
'What a coincidence... we had only met yesterday at the birthday banquet, and now we are crossing paths again so soon.' Natalie thought to herself.
Natalie remained silent, leading Serena to assume she had been forgotten. She quickly added, "Do you remember? Yesterday at Mr. Ruben's birthday banquet, I accidentally spilled wine on you..."
"I remember."
Serena beamed, "It seems like we have a special connection."
She then winked, her expression mysterious as she said, "We talked a lot about you last night."
"What did you talk about?"
