Chapter 725 Using the Child as a Stake
Brice's report put Adrian into deep muse.
A bunch of coincidences happening together were no longer coincidences.
Without someone pulling the strings behind the scenes, the rapid promotion of an average attending physician within a few months and their subsequent transfer to another city would be truly implausible.
Adrian was itching to see what kind of game Alice was playing.
Meanwhile, Natalie was neck-deep in her crazy filming schedule.
She was playing Aurora, a regular office worker, in Chris's new flick. Aurora was tough as nails and stubborn as a mule.
Her co-star was a hotshot young actor named Sheldon Ward.
It was Natalie's first gig with Sheldon.
The past month of shooting had been a blast.
In just two weeks, they'd wrap up filming.
Natalie had been so swamped with work that she hadn't even crashed at her own place, staying at the hotel the crew booked instead.
Heather, now the VP, had a ton of company stuff to juggle. So she picked a sharp and savvy assistant, Lila, for Natalie.
Lila was fresh out of college, in her early twenties, and specialized in nutrition and health. Basically, she was a nutritionist. As an assistant, Lila also kept an eye on Natalie's diet.
Whenever there were filming tasks or work, Heather or Lila would get the heads-up.
Lila was pretty sharp and capable. Her half-a-month work as Natalie assistant pleased Natalie a great deal.
Mindy hardly showed up at the company anymore. But since she was still under contract, and the penalty fee set by Dynamic Entertainment Media was sky-high, no small company dared to poach her. Mindy's contract renewed every three years, and it looked like she was waiting for it to expire this time.
Seeing Heather and Karen above her at the company was a real drag for her.
There were also some minor issues Heather didn't bother Natalie with, like how Alice wanted a high-end endorsement but got blocked.
Heather wasn't having it.
In the company's high-level vote, almost no one backed Alice.
Even Alice's agent, Karen, thought it was a bad idea.
Even though Alice had Claire put pressure on Finnian, he still blocked the endorsement.
Claire's clout at Dynamic Entertainment was fading.
Claire had been praying a lot lately, and nightmares kept waking her up at night.
One night, her dream was visited by a little boy covered in blood, who held her hand, calling out, "Grandma, Grandma."
Claire woke with a start, clutching a cross and reciting the Bible until she calmed down.
That kid had always been Claire's biggest regret.
The Howard Family had pinned all their hopes and love on that child, but because of Claire, he was gone in an instant. She sighed and didn't sleep again that night.
The next morning, Claire hit the church early to find some peace.
Even though Alice was a bit of a diva and not as sweet as she seemed, Claire always had a soft spot for her because of that child. Unless there was solid proof the kid wasn't Adrian's, Claire wouldn't believe otherwise.
No one would gamble with a child's life.
Claire had been a mom herself. Giving birth to Adrian had taken a toll on her body. So she always felt a deep sorrow for Alice's miscarriage.
