Rachel found herself at a loss, "I can't say for certain," she admitted. The specifics of Adrian's engagement eluded her, but she was aware that Jamie held an interest in the matter. As such, she promptly sifted through her memory for any relevant details to share with him.

After a moment of contemplation, she suddenly recalled, "Ah, I remember Aunt Melissa mentioning that Alice had once saved Adrian. As you're aware, the Cullens are a minor family, largely ignored by the Howards. Yet, Adrian seems to have a soft spot for her."

"He likes her, huh…" Jamie chuckled, his voice laced with subtle implications.

Rachel was unaccustomed to seeing Jamie smile. His handsome features, illuminated by the dazzling lights, took on an edge that made her heart flutter.

"Jamie," she began, but her words fell on deaf ears as Jamie, disinterested, made his way to the elevator, leaning heavily on his cane.

Rachel wasn't upset. She understood Jamie's eccentricities, having known him since childhood. Her affection for him was long-standing, his physical impairment inconsequential to her.

Alice, who had been observing them, was taken aback by Rachel's interest in Jamie, despite his disability. However, seeing Jamie's indifference towards Rachel brought her a sense of satisfaction. After all, Rachel had always been snide towards her; this was poetic justice. Yet, Alice knew that to successfully integrate into the Howard family, she needed to improve her rapport with Rachel.

With a plan quickly formulated, Alice seized the opportunity presented by Rachel's moment of vulnerability. She approached her, a glass of red wine in hand. "Rachel."

Startled by the unexpected voice, Rachel turned to find Alice standing there. Her immediate reaction was one of displeasure. "What are you doing here?"

Ignoring Rachel's hostility, Alice approached with a placating smile. "Rachel, I'm here to help you."

Rachel's eyebrow arched in disbelief. "You? Help me?"

"I'm aware of your feelings for Mr. Lawson, and I believe I can assist you."

Rachel scoffed dismissively, uninterested in entertaining Alice's proposition.

Just as she was about to walk away, Alice's voice halted her. "Do you truly wish to see Mr. Lawson with someone else?"

Rachel's steps faltered, and she turned to face Alice. "What are you implying?"

"Do you know what kind of woman most men prefer?"

Rachel shook her head. Despite her privileged upbringing and numerous suitors, she had never truly experienced love, leaving her with a limited understanding of men.

"And you do?" she questioned.

Alice leaned in, whispering a few words into Rachel's ear.

Rachel's face flushed a deep red, her eyes widening in shock. "No!! That can't be true!"

"If you're unwilling to make even this sacrifice, then why bother chasing his love?" Alice retorted with a sneer.

Alice's intentions were far from altruistic. While Rachel might have been born into wealth and was admittedly spoiled, she was also incredibly naive, bordering on foolish.

Alice's conviction was only strengthened by the panic evident in Rachel's eyes.

Alice had her sights set on becoming Mrs. Howard, a goal that necessitated forming a closer bond with Rachel. After all, she was Adrian's sister, and having leverage over her would be beneficial.

Alice smiled to herself, thinking, 'This way, I can keep a tight rein on Rachel!'

Seeing Rachel's hesitation, Alice leaned in once more, whispering, "Do you know why Adrian insisted on marrying me?"

Rachel shook her head, her curiosity piqued.
