Chapter 39 She Reminded him of Natalie
Natalie's eyes darkened a bit, but she looked up at him with a bright smile. "Sure."
She hesitated for a moment, biting her lip, but finally decided to give him the gift she had prepared.
Even though it was relatively inexpensive compared to his personal items, costing only a few hundred dollars.
"I bought a tie while I was out shopping the other day," Natalie said, pulling a small bag from her purse and opening the box inside. It was a dark green tie with subtle embroidery, costing her $389. It wasn't a high-end brand, but she had saved up for a long time to buy it.
She didn't look him in the eye, nor did she dare to ask if he liked it.
Adrian's eyes lit up with surprise as he looked at the cautious woman in front of him.
He took her hand and brought it to his lips, his voice tender. "It's beautiful. I love it. Help me put it on."
Natalie's nervousness eased a bit at his words.
She reached out to remove his current tie, her fingers brushing against his cool neck.
Adrian's gaze stayed locked on her, watching her blush as she carefully tied the new tie. A strange sense of happiness filled him.
Noticing her eyes reddening, he pulled her into a hug, frowning. "What's wrong? Are you upset?"
Natalie stopped being cautious and hugged him tightly, her cheek pressed against his strong chest. Her voice was muffled. "Yeah, I don't want you to go."
Adrian couldn't help but chuckle. It was the first time she had shown such tenderness in front of him.
He gently ruffled her hair, saying, "It's just two weeks. I promise I'll try to come back sooner."
She looked at the softness in his eyes. Bathed in the vast morning light behind him, he didn't seem as cold or distant as usual.
Biting her lip and with her eyes stinging, she couldn't help but ask, "Adrian, do you like me? Do you like the person I am now?"
Just once, she wanted to hear him say he liked her, not Alice.
Even if when he came back, she would reverted to being the distant Natalie.
"What do you think? Alice, you're my fiancée," he said, kissing her forehead lightly.
Natalie lowered her eyes, hiding a hint of sadness.
When Adrian let go of her, he noticed the familiar black string around her neck, with a diamond pendant peeking out.
His gaze paused, and he said softly, "The string is a bit long. Why not shorten it?"
"What?" Natalie asked, puzzled.
He looked at her delicate chin, which remained beautiful and refined even under heavy makeup.
Her gentle movements and clear eyes made him realize she was different from the Alice he knew.
Sometimes she was sweet and cute, sometimes straightforward and innocent, and sometimes a bit willful.
Seeing the diamond pendant around her neck, Adrian felt a strange sensation inside.
"Take off the pendant," he said.
"What?"
Natalie looked down, realizing he was talking about the birthday gift from Bella.
He shortened the string and put the pendant back around her neck.
Natalie hadn't expected Adrian to be so thoughtful.
She looked at Adrian. "Is this better? This pendant seems valuable. It's safer tucked inside my clothes."
She was afraid it might get damaged if it was exposed.
"It looks better this way." Adrian's eyes held a faint smile.
With the pendant, Alice looked even more elegant.
If it weren't for the heavy makeup, her aura really reminded him of Natalie.
"Alice, don't you think your maid, Natalie, looks a lot like you?" Adrian suddenly asked.
