Chapter 817 Preemptive Strike

Moreover, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about all this.

With Alice's personality, she wouldn't just stay quiet if something happened. She'd make sure everyone would fuss about any trivia of hers.

About ten minutes later, Curtis and Avery showed up. Avery came in with a lot of questions. After all, Alice had fainted at the Howard Mansion, and, she was rushed to the ER. Avery wanted to give the Howard family a hard time, hoping Claire would show some respect and help out if needed.

But Melissa beat him to it.

Melissa turned to Avery and Curtis, saying, "Your housekeeper's a real gem! Alice has been feeling sick with stomach pain since yesterday and kept it to herself, making things worse. And now Renee's full of excuses! This is ridiculous! If something happens to the baby, can she take responsibility?"

Curtis looked at Renee. He'd gotten a call saying Alice had fainted and was in the ER, and there might be a problem with the baby. So he rushed over with Avery, but he didn't expect it to be this serious. Alice was still in the ER, and Melissa was already confronting him. He looked at Melissa. "I'm sorry. How's my daughter now?"

Avery, standing behind, seemed annoyed with Melissa's approach and wanted to speak, but Curtis stopped her with a look.

Avery was frustrated and glared at Renee.

Renee felt wronged and thought, 'What does this have to do with me? It's all Alice's decision.'

Melissa glanced at the ER door and said, "We got here half an hour ago. Alice suddenly said she felt unwell and fainted, so we brought her to the hospital. Renee said Alice was feeling unwell since yesterday but kept it hidden until today."

Avery glared at Renee and asked, "What's going on? How have you been taking care of Alice?"

Renee's face turned pale. She didn't expect the blame to fall on her. She quickly said, "Mrs. Cullen, Alice said yesterday that she didn't want to be a buzzkiller with her mild discomfort. Today, she couldn't bear it anymore and suddenly fainted."

Avery said, "Alice is really considerate and kind."

Melissa raised an eyebrow and glanced at Avery. She had never liked Avery. During this period of interaction, she found Avery to be too calculating and scheming. Alice also had some little tricks of her own. Claire, being kind-hearted, couldn't see through it, but Melissa, having been through many business battles, could see through people's personalities at a glance. If it weren't for Alice being pregnant and her family background being clean, and Alice's little tricks not being too excessive, Melissa would have tolerated it.

After all, no one was perfect.

Renee said, "Yes, Alice is kind-hearted and has been enduring the pain."

Melissa frowned. "Curtis, you really have a good servant in your house, always pushing everything onto her master. Do you mean that Alice knew she was unwell but still endured it? She should know how precious her belly is. Is she refusing keeping this baby on purpose?"
