Chapter 416 Just a Guy Friend
"What's the deal? Did you hit up Samantha? Why ain't she here yet?"
It was already half an hour past the scheduled time, and Assistant Director Chris Griffin was losing his cool.
The director's assistant whipped out his phone, made a quick call, and then reported back to Chris, "She's on her way. Samantha said she's stuck in traffic but will be here soon. Just hang tight."
Chris, rocking long hair and an artsy vibe in his mid-thirties, was a punctual man. He had a background in photography and was Esme's go-to cinematographer. After working on a bunch of films with her, he became her assistant director and right-hand man. Esme was like the godmother of youth romance films in the country, and everyone in the biz respected her. Newbies often got their start in her films, so they respected Chris too.
Seeing Chris's dark mood, the assistant said, "Mr. Griffin, I'll nudge Samantha again. Don't stress, she'll be here soon."
Chris just waved him off.
Meanwhile, Natalie was getting her makeup touched up, and the crew's makeup artist was doing her hair.
"Ms. Teeger, your hair is so well-kept."
Natalie smiled. "Thanks."
Harper was sitting across from Natalie. According to the schedule, they should've wrapped up by now, but with the lead actress MIA, they were stuck. Three crucial scenes still needed shooting.
Harper grumbled, "I knew it. Samantha was bound to be late."
"Hope it doesn't drag on too long," Natalie said, glancing at her watch. They were already half an hour behind.
Natalie's assistant, Yvonne Chambers, chimed in, "Natalie, your phone's been ringing. It's Mr. Howard. Wanna answer it?"
Natalie sighed, knowing Adrian was probably getting antsy.
Yvonne, a young girl about Natalie's age sent by Mindy, handed over the phone.
Natalie answered, "Hey."
She apologized, "Looks like I'll be here a while longer. We're still shooting."
Adrian asked, "How many scenes left?"
Even over the phone, Natalie could sense his impatience.
"Three more scenes," she said, rubbing her temples. "How about we cancel our date tonight? I'll make it up to you another time. It's gonna be a late one."
Adrian didn't respond to that but asked, "Where are you now?"
Natalie looked around. "Downtown library."
After hanging up, Natalie handed the phone back to Yvonne.
Harper looked at Natalie curiously. "Boyfriend?"
Natalie corrected her. "Just a guy friend."
Harper smirked. "Same difference. But Natalie, I heard Dynamic Entertainment is super strict with their artists. Don't you have to report all your guy friends? Aren't you worried your manager will flip?"
Natalie pursed her lips. "My manager knows."
Harper asked, "Who's your manager? You've been here for days, but I haven't seen her."
Natalie replied, "Mindy."
Harper's eyes widened. "Wait, Mindy?"
Harper's assistant gasped. "Mindy from Dynamic Entertainment?"
Seeing Natalie nod, Harper was shocked. "No way. Do you know who the top five managers in the industry are?"
Natalie didn't really keep up with that stuff and honestly had no clue.
She signed with Dynamic Entertainment because it was part of the Howard Group, and Adrian hooked her up with resources. It was a fair trade.
Dynamic Entertainment was one of the top film companies, cranking out tons of projects every year.
Harper said, "Mindy's one of the top five managers. Besides Dynamic Entertainment's muscle, she's a powerhouse on her own. I didn't expect you to be her artist."
Harper's assistant gossiped, "I heard Mindy is super strict with newbies. Is that true?"
Before Natalie could answer, Harper cut in, "You're too nosy. Just because Mindy is Natalie's main manager doesn't mean she'll handle her personally."
That made sense. If Mindy were managing Natalie, why would she be stuck in a supporting role?
Both Samantha and Natalie were new to Dynamic Entertainment, but Samantha snagged the lead in Esme's film.
Harper sighed. Natalie seemed like the type who, despite her looks and demeanor, wouldn't get good roles and was destined to be overlooked in the industry.
