Chapter 16 She's Alice Now
Adrian let go of her wrist, straightened his already neat sleeve, and said in a low voice, "You spilled coffee on me on purpose, schemed to get close to Daniel, and now you're here in my class with a face that looks just like Alice's. Don't tell me this is all a coincidence."
Natalie finally understood that he thought she was trying to get his attention on purpose!
Her anxiety finally eased, but a sense of grievance suddenly overwhelmed her.
For the first time throughout her life, she hated her face.
Holding back her emotions, she said, "Adrian, I didn't mean to get close to you."
Then she continued, "If you're here because I failed to answer the question in class, I admit that was my mistake. But I'm sorry, you mistook me for someone else."
With that, she bowed respectfully. "If there's nothing else, I'll be going."
Without waiting for Adrian to respond, she turned and left.
Adrian watched her figure walk away, his frown deepening.
Could he have misunderstood her?
He quickly made a call. "I need all the information on Natalie."
The next morning, Natalie got a call from Adrian. Well, actually, it was a call for Alice.
He said he wanted to take her somewhere that evening.
Natalie didn't dare refuse, and she quickly put on heavy makeup to look like Alice.
After lunch, Adrian's driver, Kyle Davis, arrived right on time to pick her up.
They went to an underground auction house.
When Natalie arrived, the place was packed. Kyle led her to the second floor and stopped at a room.
As soon as she walked in, she saw Adrian holding a wine glass on the sofa.
Even with the makeup, Natalie was afraid he'd notice something was off. So she sat on the far end of the sofa, as far from him as possible.
Adrian's eyes landed on her face. The heavy makeup made him frown slightly. He beckoned her over. "Come here."
Natalie bit her lip, knowing she couldn't refuse him. She lowered her head and slowly moved closer.
Before she got too close, he suddenly reached out and pulled her into his arms.
Natalie tensed up, struggling to break free, but his grip tightened.
"Alice, be good," he whispered in her ear, his breath tickling her and making her feel as if she were melting.
Natalie didn't dare move anymore.
She was Alice now, his fiancée.
Adrian's fingers gently brushed her cheek, the heavy makeup smudging on his fingertips. He asked, "You're wearing makeup?"
"Yeah, it's a popular look lately. You don't like it?" Natalie asked.
"I like it," Adrian replied.
He said it so firmly that Natalie was stunned, feeling as if his words sent a jolt through her heart.
But she kept her head down and missed the absence of emotion in his clear eyes.
Adrian was fully aware that his feelings for Alice were purely out of duty. Yet, for some reason, having Alice by his side reminded him of Natalie.
