Chapter 777 Hostage

Derek might've been young, but he had this calm vibe that made Campbell trust him right away.

"I'll go in and swap out the pregnant woman," Derek said.

"That's way too risky!" Campbell shot back.

Derek didn't back down. "I need to see what's going on inside. If I switch her out, I can get a better read on the situation. These guys have probably pulled this stunt before. You should check out nationwide robbery cases from the past decade; you might find a pattern."

Derek had noticed a logo on the guns these guys were packing. It looked like they were part of some team or organization. He hoped he was right.

"I'll go in with you!" a shaky female voice piped up.

Derek turned, surprised, to see a young woman with soft brown hair and a mask. Her eyes were bright but scared, and her fingers were trembling. Still, she said, "I'll go in with you."

"It's really dangerous in there," Derek warned.

The female doctor bit her lip and took a deep breath. "Then it's dangerous for you, too, and even more so for the pregnant woman. Let's go in and switch out those two customers."

Derek looked at her. With the mask on her face, he could only see those bright eyes fixed on him. She was scared and shaking, but her eyes were full of determination. Derek never forgot that look.

Inside the store, things were just as Derek had imagined, but luckily, no one was hurt yet.

Derek raised his hands. He wasn't a cop and had no police ID. The thugs searched him and, after confirming he was just a regular guy, let him stay.

"Are you sure he's not a cop? Don't switch a cop in here," someone inside yelled.

"We checked; he's definitely not."

A gun was pointed at Derek. A big guy in a black hood laughed and poked Derek's back with the gun. "He's skinny and weak. How could a cop look like this? A weakling trying to be a hero?"

Derek grinned. "Everyone's got a bit of hero in them."

He quickly scanned the jewelry store, taking in the scene. There were six thugs, all in black hoods with guns. Eight hostages were crouched on the ground, mostly women. The pregnant woman looked about seven months along, her belly sticking out. She was terrified, sitting on the ground and gasping for breath, clearly in distress. The female doctor immediately started examining her.

After checking her out, the female doctor said, "We've come in. Please let these two go. They're just customers."

The pregnant woman was in bad shape, showing signs of bleeding. If she didn't get to a hospital soon, her baby could be in serious trouble. Her face was covered in cold sweat, and she clung to the female doctor's hand, recognizing her as a doctor, and begged, "Please, save me and my baby."

The female doctor looked anxiously at Derek.

Derek scanned the room again, his eyes landing on a guy sitting in a chair with a gun. Though his face was hidden, his build and demeanor suggested he was a burly man in his forties with well-developed arm muscles. This guy was probably their leader.
