Chapter 728 Powerless
Natalie had just wrapped up a long day of filming and dragged herself back to the hotel.
That night, her phone buzzed. It was Bella.
Bella's voice was shaky, "Natalie, you there?"
"Hey, Bella. What's up?" Natalie hadn't caught up with Bella in ages, thanks to her crazy schedule.
"Natalie, I'm freaking out. I don't know who else to call. Austin's in a really bad way." Bella's sobs echoed through the phone.
Natalie frowned. "What happened?"
Bella had tied the knot with Austin, but his health had been going downhill fast. At first, he could still get up and move around. Now, he was stuck in bed for a week, hooked up to all sorts of tubes.
Bella felt lost and turned to Natalie for assistance. The helplessness was eating her alive.
Natalie gripped her phone tight, trying to soothe her, "Don't worry. It'll be okay."
Bella's voice was rough. "Austin's got so many issues from that car crash. The docs say he's at the end of the line." Bella couldn't wrap her head around why fate would let her fall for Austin, only to snatch him away. It was just too cruel.
Natalie asked, "Where are you now?"
Bella replied, "I'm at Oasis Hospital."
Natalie hit up Derek. That night, Derek drove an hour to get Natalie to Oasis Hospital.
The ICU was on the first floor. Natalie rushed over and spotted Bella sitting on a bench outside.
They hadn't seen each other in months, and Bella was all skin and bones
"Bella." Natalie hurried over.
"Natalie." Bella looked up, tears streaming down her face. She hugged Natalie tight. "Natalie, what do I do?"
Natalie glanced through the ICU window at Austin, pale and frail in bed, his chest barely moving. Tubes were everywhere, and it seemed like the machines were the only things keeping him alive.
Bella leaned on Natalie's shoulder. "The docs say Austin might end up a vegetable, living only because of the machines, or he might just... go."
Natalie gently patted Bella's shoulder. "It'll be okay. It surely will."
Bella closed her eyes, pained. "Austin's such a good guy, always kind to everyone. Even when he knew I was sent by Cassidy, he still treated me well and never doubted me. Why does someone as good as Austin have to suffer so much?"
Natalie felt just as helpless, unable to do anything for Bella. All she could do was try to give her some strength through her hug.
After a while, footsteps echoed down the hall. A man walked over. "Bella, you need to rest. I'll stay here."
Bella shuddered. "Nicholas, what are you doing here?"
Nicholas glanced at Natalie but didn't really acknowledge her. He turned to Bella, "You've been here for days, you're exhausted. Go home."
"Go home, where? The Reynolds Mansion? That's Cassidy's place now." Bella found it laughable.
