Chapter 721 The Child Wasn't Mine at All
Claire voiced, "Natalie ain't just scheming a bit; she's straight-up trying to mess us up. Adrian, I ain't trying to butt into your business, and I respect you, but have you ever thought that the Natalie you like might be playing you? She's got you fooled with that sweet act."
"I ain't fooled." Adrian was sharp. "Mom, I like Natalie, I like everything about her."
Claire got up, looking dead serious. "Adrian, do you know how many folks are gunning for your spot right now? Donte's been itching to take you down. Remember, Alice almost died saving me. Under all that pressure, you promised to marry her. You made a commitment."
Adrian stayed quiet.
Claire shook her head. "What's wrong with Alice? She gave up so much to save me, even lost your kid. If that baby was born, it'd be a year old now."
Adrian knew this was a sore spot for Claire. After a moment, he said, "Mom, I found some evidence. The chandelier that almost fell on you at the charity gala was tampered with, and I got some clues about who did it. I just never wanted to tell you."
Claire's health was always shaky, especially during the monsoon, so Adrian didn't want to stress her out.
"What are you saying?" Claire looked at Adrian. It had been so long; why did Adrian bring it up now?
Adrian said, "Mom, do you really think Alice would risk her life to save you? Or has her fake kindness fooled even you?"
Claire was shocked. "You think Alice did this? How could that be?"
"Or what?" Adrian smirked. "You really think Alice would risk her life and her unborn kid to save you? What's in it for her?"
Claire was stumped. She wanted to say maybe Alice was just kind-hearted. But would kindness make someone risk their life? Alice saved her with huge cost.
Claire shook her head. "No, why would Alice pay such a high price? The baby was nine months along. If it was born, it would've been the first great-grandkid of the Howard Family. Ruben and we would've been thrilled."
"There's only one reason," Adrian said seriously, "The baby wasn't mine."
Since the charity gala incident, Adrian had hired a private detective.
But a month went by with nothing.
Adrian switched to two more investigators.
The culprit covered their tracks well.
Almost no clues.
Then, one investigator found something. Everyone at the gala had to go through security, so it had to be an inside job. Someone found out a security guard bought a saw a week before the event, and the buyer was one of the Howard Family's bodyguards.
At that moment, Adrian knew it was an inside job.
Whoever wanted to hurt Claire and cause a scene had to be someone within the Howard Family.
Adrian thought they were targeting him, so they went after Claire.
