Chapter 40 Not Gonna Let Them Off Easy
Natalie suddenly felt a wave of anxiety. Noticing his probing gaze on her face, she said in a slightly trembling voice, "We don't look that much alike. You can tell us apart, right?"
She had a glimmer of hope when she said it, but immediately regretted it. If he realized she wasn't Alice, how would she explain everything that had happened?
Just as Natalie was caught in her thoughts, the boarding announcement echoed through the airport.
"Take care on your trip. I'll be waiting for you to come back," Natalie said, quickly changing the subject.
She smiled, as radiant as a blooming rose.
Adrian dismissed his suspicions almost instantly.
Alice couldn't possibly be Natalie.
Natalie saw him off at the gate. As she watched the plane take off, the light in her eyes dimmed.
'Adrian, when you come back, the woman you love will be here for you. This experience has been unlike any other. I'm grateful to have met you, and I'm sorry for deceiving you. It wasn't my intention. Alice's waiting for you. And Natalie will disappear from your life, just as you wish,' Natalie thought bitterly.
When Natalie returned to the Cullen family home, only Curtis was there.
She went straight to the study and told Curtis that Adrian had gone to the Veronothe Howard Group branch to handle some business.
"Natalie, you've been a great help during this time," Curtis said, pulling out a card from his drawer. There was $200,000 on this card. "For your mother's medical bills. Let me know if you need more. As for the kidney donor, I've got people looking, but it's tough to find one."
"Thank you, Curtis." Natalie knew how rare and lucky it was to find a kidney donor.
"Curtis, I need a favor," Natalie said, biting her lip and hesitating for a moment. "I've missed a lot of classes taking care of my mom. Now I'm short on credits for one course, and I'm worried it might delay my graduation."
Curtis nodded in understanding. "I went to school with the vice president of Ardentia University. I'll talk to him. Don't worry. Take care of your mom."
"Thank you, Curtis," Natalie said sincerely.
As she left the study, she ran into Avery, who had just returned from the hospital.
"Where have you been these past few days? Off with some guy again? What were you talking about in the study?" Avery's words were always harsh. Natalie didn't bother explaining and shot back, "Why don't you ask Curtis what we talked about?"
Avery narrowed her eyes, deep in thought. Natalie rarely went to the second floor of the villa unless she was going to the study to see Curtis.
Thinking of this, she hurried upstairs and casually asked, "What did Natalie want?"
Curtis was busy with paperwork but paused to answer, "Avery, I know exactly what you've been up to at the hospital. You moved Rosalie to the hallway and refused to pay her medical bills. Rosalie is Stanley's wife. How could you do such a thing?"
Avery's face darkened at the mention of this.
She knew Natalie would tattle!
Just like her lowly mother!
"Are you really doing this for Stanley? Or is it because Rosalie was your old flame?"
"Shut up!" Curtis slammed his hand on the desk.
Avery flinched but didn't back down. "I hit a nerve, didn't I? You're doing this for that woman!"
From the moment she first saw Natalie, she thought Natalie looked a lot like her daughter, Alice.
If it weren't for the paternity test, she would have believed Natalie was Curtis and Rosalie's illegitimate child!
Natalie and Rosalie, she wouldn't let either of them off easy!
