Natalie didn't dodge or hide. She looked into Ruben's eyes, "Avery is my biological mother."
In the study, Ruben sat on the sofa, "Why did you keep this from the family?"
"Because I felt ashamed. I grew up at the Cullen Villa and never had a single good day. My adoptive mother Rosalie was a maid, and I was just the maid's daughter who got bossed around. When I found out one day that I should have been the young lady of that house, I just felt ashamed and didn't want to admit it." Natalie's lips parted slightly, her face pale, her voice hoarse yet clear, "I never thought she would go down such a desperate path for Alice. I never thought that because of her, I would lose a child and the person I loved most." Adrian lost his memory in that car accident and couldn't remember her anymore.
In the entire study, there were only Ruben and Natalie.
Ruben's feelings were complicated as he looked at the girl before him, strong yet pale.
Natalie raised her eyes, her gaze scattered, "I never imagined that the mother I respected and loved was my adoptive mother. She switched Alice and me from the moment we were born, and my biological mother made me lose the most precious thing in my world."
Ruben said, "Natalie, the grudges between you and the Cullen family aren't something we can interfere with, but Avery nearly made me lose my grandchild. That's something I cannot tolerate. Natalie shook her head, "No, I don't think so."
Ruben nodded, "Alright, you can go now. Let's just let this matter pass. Don't take Melissa's questioning to heart either. After all, Melissa is your elder, and she's just looking out for the Howard family."
"I understand."
Natalie nodded and left the study.
Jeffery walked into the study. Ruben sighed, "I really like this Natalie, but unfortunately, her background is too complicated."
