Chapter 283 Opportunity
Megan finished wiping the table and started disinfecting the sofa. Her hands shook, and she looked desperate. "Natalie, I had no choice."
Natalie turned, the night wind messing up her hair. "That bracelet isn't super valuable, but it's a good brand. Even second-hand, it could sell for ten grand. Imperial Nightclub has rules; you have to return anything you find. If they find out, I can't help you."
Megan gripped the cloth tighter, her lips pale. "Natalie, please don't tell the manager. I'm begging you."
She moved closer to Natalie, almost kneeling.
Natalie was taken aback. "Megan!"
"My granddaughter's sick. My son's gone, my daughter-in-law's in prison. Two months ago, my granddaughter was diagnosed with a heart problem and needs surgery. It costs tens of thousands. I've saved every penny I could all my life, but it's not enough. When I saw that bracelet, I..." Megan's eyes filled with tears.
Natalie said, "Megan, I'll pretend this never happened, but there's surveillance. Don't risk losing your job over ten thousand dollars. It's not worth it."
"I know. I was going to take the bracelet to the front desk, but I heard the surveillance on the fifth floor was down for two hours." That's when Megan got greedy.
"Natalie, if you don't say anything, no one will know. I'm begging you." Megan tried to kneel again.
Natalie quickly supported her. She sighed. "Alright."
As she left the room, she glanced back at Megan, busy cleaning. That hunched figure reminded her of Rosalie, who worked tirelessly for the Cullen family.
People at the bottom of this city had too many struggles.
The more you were at the bottom, the more you understood others in the same situation.
Natalie didn't tell anyone about Megan taking the bracelet, but the next evening, she heard from Susan that Megan had been fired.
Natalie paused while changing clothes. "Fired? How?"
"She took a guest's bracelet without permission. It was a new Cartier model. The guest came back for it, and the front desk said it wasn't there, so they checked," Fiona Hayes said, "They found out it was Megan who took it, so they fired her on the spot."
Natalie was confused, asking, "Didn't they say the surveillance on the fifth floor was down for two hours that night?"
Fiona replied, "It was down, but only for rooms 501 to 504 and 507 to 511. The surveillance for rooms 506 and 505 was working fine."
Natalie pressed her lips together and sighed.
Denise said, "Megan seemed so honest. How could she take a guest's belongings, especially something so valuable? Getting fired was already Manager Nicholson pleading on her behalf. Otherwise, the guest was ready to call the police."
Fiona remarked, "Greed."
She added, "This is a lesson. You can't be greedy. If you're caught, you lose your job, and if the amount is large, you could end up in jail."
Natalie finished changing and went to the private room. Tonight wasn't busy. She stood outside, with Fiona inside.
Leaning against the wall, Natalie thought of Megan's pleading face.
Even though she didn't tell, she still felt bad. Only those who have known the depths of hardship can truly grasp the suffering of others who share that experience. After Rosalie's serious illness, she realized every penny matters.
This world was inherently unequal.
She and Alice had similar faces, but Alice was the daughter of the Cullen family, Adrian's fiancée. One of Alice's bags cost more than half a year's work for her.
If God gave her a chance, she would seize it tightly and never let go!
