Chapter 610 The Plot Exposed
The young reporter shot a quick look at Rose. Even though Rose had told her to zip it, she didn't wanna lose her gig, so she blurted out, "It was Diana. She spilled the beans to Rose about Mrs. Teeger passing out and getting carted off by the ambulance. We hustled over to snag the scoop."
Rose's face went ghostly white. "Who told you to blab? I'm getting the editor-in-chief to sack you."
Natalie let out a little laugh, "Diana?" She turned to Alice. "Was that you?"
Alice didn't see that coming. Her face drained of color, and she tried to play dumb under Natalie's glare. "Oh my God, how could Diana pull that? I have no clue."
Natalie rolled her eyes. "Cut the act, Alice. You were banking on Rosalie kicking the bucket and me not showing up. Then, when I did, the media would be all over it. Next day, they'd drop a video saying Rosalie was on death's door and I didn't make it in time. People would roast me."
Heather was floored.
So that was Alice's game plan.
Fortunately,they caught on in time.
Alice, realizing the jig was up, didn't bother being nice to Natalie. But she eyed the brooch in Heather's hand, worried it might be recording.
Alice tried to keep her cool. "Natalie, we're tight. Rosalie's looked out for me since I was a kid. Now that she's sick, I'm super worried. I know you're hurting, too. I get why you said those harsh things."
Natalie glanced at Derek. "Deal with these two reporters. And as for Rose, I don't wanna see her face again."
Derek nodded. "Got it."
Rose, scared but in disbelief that Natalie could actually get her fired, saw she couldn't snatch the camera and the intern wasn't backing her up. She stormed off in a huff. The intern kept apologizing to Natalie and then left too.
Down the hall, the red light of the operating room was still on.
Rosalie had been in there for three hours.
The door swung open, and a nurse stepped out. "Who's the family?"
Natalie didn't budge, just gave Alice a look. "You handle it."
Alice was taken aback. "Why me?"
Natalie said, "Heather, since we ditched the reporters, make sure to get some good shots of Alice. Buy her a headline tomorrow. She loves playing the hero. Let's make her dream come true."
Heather grabbed the camera from Derek, switched it on, and aimed it at Alice.
Alice stared at the lens, the words she wanted to spit out stuck in her throat. She signed the papers the nurse handed over.
As the nurse was about to head back in, Natalie asked, her voice a bit raspy, "How's Rosalie doing?"
The nurse, wearing a mask and shades, glanced at her. "Her kidney's shot. If it gets worse, she'll need a transplant."
Natalie asked, "Hasn't she had this kidney for less than a year?"
"Depends on the patient. A transplant doesn't mean smooth sailing forever. Right now, we need to stabilize her." The nurse looked at their designer clothes, figuring they weren't strapped for cash. "Once she's stable, we can think about a transplant."
In other words, Rosalie was out of the woods for now.
Natalie let out a sigh of relief.
