Heather chimed in, "Karen's got the same game plan as Mindy. She wants to ride your coattails to snag the VP spot at Dynamic Entertainment. You never know when things might shake up, and the top dogs might change. Mr. Abernathy's playing it cool, keeping things balanced. But Herman and Finnian? They're at each other's throats, trying to take each other down. They're both stuck, can't make a move without the other knowing, and they're building their own little armies. Every year, Dynamic does an audit. Last VP got busted for skimming off the top and is now doing time. This year's audit is in two months, and both Finnian and Herman have dirty hands. Their accounts are a mess. To get where they are, they've all played dirty. But after this audit, one of them's going down for sure."
Natalie nodded. "So Karen's trying to get me on her side. She wants my backing to climb up to VP."
Heather replied briskly, "Exactly. Karen's in a tight spot this year. On the surface, Karen and Mindy are the big shots at Dynamic, but Lydia's been raking in the dough for the company. Her low-budget series blew up, netting $10 million. Karen's getting squeezed by both Lydia and Mindy. When Karen signed Alice, she was on top, thinking she had the future Mrs. Howard in her pocket. Alice was pregnant with Adrian's kid. But then the baby was lost, and Alice ended up in the hospital. Now Alice is making a comeback, and Karen's freaking out."
Natalie stared ahead, "I keep wondering what Karen's got that could sway me."
Karen wouldn't come to Natalie without some serious confidence.
Around 3 PM, at a café on the hotel's top floor, it was pretty empty. Only VIPs from the hotel were around. Natalie picked a quiet booth and sipped her coffee.
Karen walked over. "I'm here with genuine intentions. Let's talk business." Karen cut to the chase. "In two months, Dynamic's doing its annual audit, and a VP spot will open up. I need your help. I know what you can do. Mindy underestimates you, thinks you're just Adrian's throwaway lover. But I know you're different. Mindy's starting to cozy up to Alice, but I'm here with real sincerity. I'm not trying to stir the pot between you and Mindy. You know what kind of person she is."
Natalie knew that was true. She knew Mindy well.
Mindy kept her schemes hidden, while Karen wore hers on her sleeve.
Natalie thought for a moment and looked at Karen. "Show me your sincerity, then."
Natalie didn't need any business or film resources. Even top-tier stuff, if she really wanted it, she could just ask Adrian. But she wouldn't do that. She wanted to see what Karen had to offer.
Karen smiled, pulled out a laptop, plugged in a USB drive, and muted the sound. She glanced around to make sure no one was watching or recording, then turned the laptop towards Natalie to show her the screen.
