Chapter 860 Receiving the Invitation
Alice immediately called up Diana. "Hey, do you know anyone with an invite to the debutante ball? Think they could sneak me in?"
'No matter what, I have to get in, even if it means I have to be brought in by someone else. It's the only way to vent my anger.' Alice thought.
Diana didn't really have friends in that circle. Among her friends, Alice was the one doing the best. The rest were lower-tier socialites. Diana herself could only attend the debutante ball because of her family connections. So there was no way she could find a second invitation for Alice.
Diana secretly resented Alice. 'Alice is supposed to be the future mistress of the Howard family, yet she still needs to ask me for help?'
But outwardly, Diana didn't dare offend Alice and could only agree to help inquire.
After hanging up with Diana, Alice figured Diana probably wouldn't be of much help. The only person she could turn to now was Rachel. Rachel naturally had an invitation, and bringing Alice in should be an easy task.
'But Rachel always ignores me. If I approach Rachel directly, it probably won't work and might even make me a laughingstock.' Thinking about it, Alice decided to go to Claire.
Claire was in the study transcribing the Bible. Ever since Alice's miscarriage, Claire had spent almost every day in the study transcribing the Bible and occasionally going to church to pray, trying to soothe her emotions. Claire had come to terms with it, thinking perhaps Alice and the Howard family were just not meant to be, which was why she lost two children.
Claire still didn't know that Alice's child was Carlos's, still seeing her as the gentle and kind daughter from the Cullen family, who occasionally threw a temper.
Her assistant said, handing over her phone, "Mrs. Howard, your phone is ringing."
Claire put down her pen and took the phone, seeing Alice's number. She frowned slightly but answered as she remembered that today was Alice's discharge day and felt that she needed to probably go see Alice.
"Alice, are you discharged? How are you?" Claire's voice was gentle as she answered the call.
Alice said, "I'm fine. The doctor said I should walk more to help the wound heal."
"Good, as long as you're okay. Once you're better, let's go to church together."
"Okay." Alice quickly agreed. After chatting with Claire for a bit, she finally brought up the real reason for her call. "Claire, I need your help with something. Rebecca Henderson is hosting a debutante ball in a few days. The invitations have already been sent out, but I didn't receive one. I'd really like to go and see it. I know Rachel has an invitation and can bring a friend along with. Could you ask Rachel to take me?"
This was a piece of cake for Claire. Claire didn't refuse and instead asked apprehensively, "Can you handle attending such an event in your condition?"
"I can. The doctor said I'm fine now and that walking more will help the wound heal." But Alice still felt pain when bending over occasionally. She hadn't fully recovered from the surgery, but she was eager to get an invitation.
