Chapter 781 Splitting into Two Groups
Derek shot a cold glare at the boss, making it clear he wasn't letting him off the hook.
Ten minutes later, Derek and the female doctor stepped out of the car.
The three guys were still in the car, alive but definitely not in good shape. Derek might be tough, but he wasn't a killer. Plus, They'd be facing the law soon enough.
Derek headed to a convenience store, used a landline to call the cops, gave them the location, and then took off.
The female doctor trailed behind him, asking, "Where are we going? How do we get back?"
She looked still in shock, but somehow, the frail guy in front of her made her feel safe.
Derek raised an eyebrow. "We?"
She nodded.
"Wait for a car," he said.
She bit her lip. "I'm Aurelia Price. What's your name?"
"Derek."
And that was it. Derek wasn't in the mood for chit-chat. He was already worrying about whether Natalie was in trouble.
Natalie didn't see Derek until evening.
The police tape was gone.
No one at the jewelry store got hurt. Since Derek left with the female doctor, Natalie had been on edge. Derek had been her driver for a year and a half, and he was one of her few friends.
When Derek finally showed up, Natalie let out a sigh of relief, her eyes landing on the cut on his arm. "You okay?"
Derek shook his head, glancing at his arm. "Just a scratch. You know me. Let's get you home before Mr. Howard starts worrying."
He waved goodbye to Chris.
Natalie got in the car, watching the street as they drove. When they passed the jewelry store, she saw the mess inside. Cops were still figuring out what was missing. A police car drove by, and she saw two officers carrying backpacks full of gold.
"Did you get the gold back?" Natalie asked.
Derek pressed his lips together. "The female doctor and I got taken. We overpowered them on the way and called the cops. The gold was in the car, but the real prize wasn't the gold. They already moved the gem."
"Gem?"
Derek drove smoothly. "These guys are mercenaries from the international K organization. I recognized the bullet pattern. Their target was a top-grade sapphire worth sixty million dollars. The gold was just a distraction."
"Did the other three have the sapphire?"
"All six got caught. They split up: one group took Chief Trevor's wife, the other took me and the female doctor. The other group got ambushed by SWAT."
"Then why do you think the gem got out? How?"
"Remember the two hostages? One was Trevor's wife, the pregnant woman, and the other was a girl who looked like a high school student. The girl got released before I got in the store."
Natalie's eyes widened.
She was sharp. She realized the girl was in on it.
An inside job—the sapphire was hidden on the high school girl.
"That sapphire's worth sixty million, which isn't a huge fortune. Why go through all this trouble? If they were really rich, they'd have diamonds worth over a hundred million and brooches worth tens of millions. Why hire mercenaries for one gem?"
