Chapter 042 Remember Your Place
Cloaked in a black tracksuit, the man's lean figure exuded an ominous aura. A black baseball cap was pulled low over his face, obscuring his features. Natalie, with a steady hand, maneuvered the wheelchair to minimize jostling as they descended the stairs. Her strength, however, was limited, and the lack of a wheelchair ramp made the task even more challenging.
After a moment of hesitation, she offered a soft suggestion. "Your wheelchair is motorized, isn't it? Perhaps if you turn it slightly..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the man pressed a button. The wheelchair lightened under Natalie's grip, a circular disk extending from its base to press against the wet steps. It moved smoothly downwards, rendering Natalie's assistance unnecessary.
She offered an awkward smile, saying, "It seems you can manage on your own. That's good."
The man finally broke his silence. His voice wasn't deep, but held a certain hoarseness that concealed his age. "I made it up here by myself. Did you think I couldn't get down?"
Natalie pursed her lips, acknowledging her overthinking. "I apologize for the intrusion," she said, quickly descending the steps. She left the man alone in his wheelchair, his head lifting to watch her go. The rain framed her slender figure, and a faint scent of cherry blossoms filled the air, refreshing his senses. Natalie's figure quickly disappeared from his sight.
The man retracted his gaze, his expression unreadable.
After leaving the cemetery, Natalie headed straight to the hospital. Rosalie's condition was deteriorating, and her worry was mounting. As she entered the hospital room, an unexpected visitor caught her off guard.
"Why are you here?" Natalie eyed the figure standing at the hospital bed suspiciously. She found it hard to believe that this was a visit to see Rosalie.
Alice, masked and bundled in layers, revealed no hint of her skin.
Upon Natalie's questioning, Alice's already sour mood soured further. She regarded Natalie with arrogance, her pale skin contrasting starkly with Alice's dark attire. "Who do you think you are? Speaking to me in such a manner?"
Rosalie immediately interjected, admonishing, "Natalie, show some respect to Ms. Cullen!"
With a sneer, Alice advanced on Natalie. "Natalie, don't forget your place," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper as she leaned in close. "The position of Adrian's wife is mine. You're nothing but a stand-in, so don't get your hopes up. Adrian would never fancy someone like you. And your mother's illness... Just one word from me, and she'll have to leave this hospital."
Alice's allergies would soon get better.
Once Adrian returned from Verona, everything would return to normal.
Natalie clenched her fists, ultimately lowering her head and saying, "Ms. Cullen, you're not yet well. It's not suitable for you to be out."
"You're right," Alice muttered sarcastically. "This place is so filthy, I could catch a germ just by breathing the air."
Natalie closed her eyes as Alice purposefully bumped into her before striding out of the room in her high heels.
It took Natalie a while to regain her composure. She approached the bed and checked on Rosalie with concern. "Mom, did Alice do anything to you?"
Rosalie maintained a stern expression and pushed Natalie's hand away, clearly dissatisfied with her behavior. "Ms. Cullen made a special trip to see me. How could you speak to her in such a way? We've been with the Cullen family for so long, received their help..."
"Mom!" Natalie couldn't contain her frustration any longer.
She couldn't stand Rosalie's subservience to the Cullen family. "Mom, we're human too. Even if she is the daughter of the Cullen family, so what? Don't you understand how she treats us on a regular basis? And Avery's cruelty toward us is well known."
Natalie couldn't understand why she had to act so subservient!
