Chapter 757 He Won't Answer

The car was tearing down the road, and Adrian watched the gap between him and Aviara Town on the map get smaller and smaller. Adrian told Natalie not to hang up, but she was out of cash and other folks needed the payphone, so she had to hang up.

After hanging up, Natalie and Anouk ducked into a hidden alley, squatted down, and munched on some bread while sipping water. The day's exhaustion and weakness slowly faded, and they started to feel a bit better.

Anouk suggested calling the cops.

Natalie shook her head. "They're lurking in the shadows, and we're out in the open. We don't even know what they look like. If we call the cops, the sirens might tip them off. Let's just head straight to the police station; it can't be far."

Anouk nodded.

Natalie had a cufflink and handed it to the shop owner. "Can you do us a solid? If a young guy comes looking for us, tell him we went to the police station. This cufflink's worth $8,000. Even if you sell it, you’ll get over $5,000."

The shop owner said, "You must be from out of town and got split up from your friend, right? Don't worry, I'll let him know when he comes. Here, take these to eat. The police station's just about ten minutes away. Cross a footbridge and go through two traffic lights, and you'll be there in no time."

Natalie and Anouk decided to head to the police station to report what happened.

After eating and getting some energy back, they made it to the police station by 9 PM.

The local cop asked, "You said you were kidnapped?"

Natalie nodded. It was only when they got there that they felt safe.

The cop said, "Alright, spill the details."

Natalie explained, "I came to the ancient town for a trip. While walking around at night, I suddenly felt a weight on my shoulder, someone bumped into me, and then I blacked out. When I woke up, I found myself in a place called Solvestan, in a rundown house. This is Anouk, and she was kidnapped, too. While we were out, we vaguely heard them talking about selling goods, this batch of goods. It's clearly a well-organized human trafficking ring."

The cop asked, "Do you remember the exact house where you were held?"

Natalie nodded. "I remember."

Natalie sketched it out.

The cop took it. "We'll send officers right away. If what you say checks out, we'll report this kidnapping case to higher-ups immediately."

Natalie said sincerely, "Thank you, officer."

Natalie and Anouk sat on the couch. Natalie tightly clenched her fingers, still feeling cold. Her nerves had been on edge the whole time. Now, sitting on the couch, exhausted and sleepy, Natalie couldn't help but close her eyes for a moment.

Anouk said, "If you're tired, just sleep."

Natalie shook her head and asked, "Where's your family? Ask the officer to make a call and have your family come pick you up."

Anouk's eyelashes trembled. "I have no parents. I just divorced my husband; he probably wouldn't want to see me."

Anouk thought for a moment and stood up, borrowed a phone from the officer, and dialed a number.

It rang several times. No one answered on the other end.

Anouk felt a pang of bitterness. She knew he wouldn't answer.

Anouk's eyes reddened, and she dialed again. This time, someone answered. Her eyes lit up. "It's me, Anouk."

As soon as Anouk spoke, a woman's voice came from the other end. "Oh, Anouk, it's Anya. He's asleep. If you need anything, just tell me."

Anouk was stunned. She bit her lip hard. She hadn't cried when she was kidnapped, but now, hearing her sister Anya's voice, she couldn't help but cry.

Anouk's husband was with her sister.
