Chapter 411 Could It Be That He Got the Wrong Person
In the hospital.
Alice was sprawled out on the bed, looking all kinds of miserable. Claire was holding her hand, trying to keep it together. "Alice, the doc says you're gonna be fine. That's a huge load off my mind. If anything had happened to you, I'd be feeling so guilty right now."
Alice's eyes were all teary. "Aunt Claire, it's all on me. I lost the baby I had with Adrian."
Claire tried to soothe her. "How could this be your fault? Alice, don't beat yourself up. Right now, you just need to focus on getting better."
Alice bit her lip, looking all fragile on the outside but super frustrated inside. She was in this mess, and Claire was clearly feeling guilty, but still, no word about Adrian marrying her or any wedding plans.
Alice's voice was shaky. "Maybe the baby and I just weren't meant to be."
Claire looked at her. "I've got the best orthopedic doc lined up. Don't stress about your arm and leg. Just rest up."
Not wanting to disturb Alice's rest, Claire got up to leave.
Seeing Claire about to go, Alice quickly asked, "Where's Adrian? Does he blame me for losing the baby?"
"Of course not! Adrian would never blame you. If anyone's to blame, it's me." Claire looked at Alice lying there and felt a pang of guilt. If she hadn't pushed for that charity gala, if she had made sure everything was checked out, this wouldn't have happened.
Outside the room, Brenda Green followed Claire. "Mrs. Howard, are you worried about what's going on between Mr. Howard and Ms. Cullen?"
Brenda had been with Claire for over 30 years, ever since the Murphy family days. She was like five years older than Claire and they often chatted.
Claire asked, "Brenda, do you remember why Adrian wanted to marry Alice?"
Brenda replied, "Mr. Howard said when he first got back, he was set up, and Ms. Cullen saved him. She lost her virginity to save him. Mr. Howard felt guilty and wanted to thank her, so he decided to marry her."
Claire nodded. "Yeah, but I can tell Adrian's not as keen on marrying her as I thought. I once suggested he have a wedding with Alice, so the baby would be legit. But he refused. He said the Howard family couldn't afford any mistakes with their descendants and wanted to wait until Alice had the baby to hold the wedding. But now..."
Brenda chimed in, "Now, the baby's gone."
She added, "And she was just half a month away from giving birth. The baby's gone, and we don't know who did it."
Claire sighed. "Now that the baby's gone, Adrian doesn't want to marry Alice, but the public's got strong opinions. Adrian's been doing a great job with the Howard Group, and Ruben's thinking of handing it over to him. I just hope this situation doesn't mess things up for Adrian."
Brenda reassured her, "Mrs. Howard, don't worry. It won't."
Claire sighed again. "I hope you're right."
"Mrs. Howard, as long as Mr. Howard marries Ms. Cullen, they'll have more kids, and the public will chill out. I'm just worried Mr. Howard doesn't want to do that."
Claire looked at Brenda. "Brenda, you've seen Adrian grow up. You know how he is. I'm afraid he doesn't want to marry Alice now, but the Howard family still owes her."
Brenda thought for a moment. "Could it be because of that woman, Natalie?"
Claire asked, "Brenda, don't you think Natalie looks a lot like Alice?"
Brenda nodded. "They do look similar, but their backgrounds are totally different."
"Brenda, do you think it's possible that..." Claire suddenly had a thought. Could it be that he got the wrong person? Was it actually Natalie? But she quickly dismissed it. How could she think something so crazy? Alice was pregnant, and the timing matched. It had to be Alice who saved Adrian.
She shook her head. "Never mind, it's nothing."
