Chapter 36 Risking It All to Save Him
Natalie didn't want another face-off with Adrian. Knowing he was around, she decided to steer clear.
After texting Bella, she waited outside the exhibition hall.
Bella soon emerged, bubbling with excitement. "Natalie, guess who I just saw? Adrian! Can you believe it?"
Natalie pressed her lips together, staying silent. Bella continued, unfazed, "He's here for the jewelry expo too. I heard the Howard Group is developing Clearwave Island. Do you know that pearl island? They're planning to combine the pearl industry with tourism there. Imagine enjoying the beautiful scenery while harvesting pearls! Once it's open next month, it's gonna be a hit."
Natalie smiled faintly, listening to Bella's chatter. Just as she was about to leave, a group of people walked out behind her.
Bella turned and enthusiastically called out, "Adrian! What a coincidence running into you here!"
Natalie's back stiffened and she reluctantly stopped.
Adrian glanced at Bella, nodded in responding, and then his eyes landed on Natalie. He paused, recognizing her.
Natalie kept her head down, noticing a pair of men's shoes in her view. Adrian stood right in front of her. She had no choice but to softly say, "Adrian."
"Hi," he responded in his deep voice, sounding like a teacher.
He raised his hand to check his watch, seemingly waiting for his assistant to bring the car.
Natalie wanted to leave and told Bella, "I'm heading out."
Bella grabbed her hand. "No way, wait for my driver. He'll give you a ride." She knew Natalie well enough to guess she'd either save on cab fare by taking the bus or walk to the subway.
"Bella," Natalie called.
As a scrutinizing gaze fell on her, she turned her face away, avoiding Adrian's eyes. She looked at the crowd trickling out of the exhibition hall. Most people nodded politely as they passed Adrian.
It was 5 PM, and the setting sun cast a warm glow.
The air had a hint of warmth, but suddenly, a cold flash of a knife appeared.
A disheveled middle-aged woman emerged from the hall, brandishing a knife, heading straight for Adrian.
He was engrossed in conversation with another man, oblivious to the danger.
Natalie saw the glint of the knife and her eyes widened in shock. She shouted, "Watch out!"
Without thinking, she pushed Adrian aside, and the woman's knife slashed across her forearm.
Pain shot through her, making she cry out.
Adrian snapped to attention, seeing the wound on her arm, his eyes filled with anger.
His voice carried a hint of barely concealed worry as he called out, "Natalie."
