Chapter 936 Keeping Promises

Jeffery greeted politely, "Ms. Teeger."

Adrian nodded and led Natalie upstairs to the study.

Jeffery watched them go, deep in thought, just as Lori walked in.

Claire had a craving for dessert, so Lori came to whip something up. She noticed Jeffery staring and asked, "Jeffery, what's got your attention?"

Jeffery replied, "Mr. Howard brought Ms. Teeger."

Lori couldn't quite place who Natalie was. She just figured Adrian had brought another woman home. After all, he had broken off his engagement with Alice, so having a new girlfriend wasn't surprising.

But as Lori headed into the kitchen, it hit her—Natalie Teeger was the young lady who had visited the Howard Mansion before and looked a lot like Alice.

There was that one time when Ruben was taken ill, and Natalie saved him. Plus, Natalie was the daughter of a servant from the Cullen family.

Lori came back out and asked Jeffery, "Why is Mr. Howard bringing Ms. Teeger here?"

Jeffery just shook his head.

Upstairs in the study, Adrian held Natalie's hand tighter, sensing her nerves. "This is Natalie, Grandpa. I'm going to marry her."

Adrian didn't say "I want to"; he said, "I'm going to marry her."

Ruben didn't respond right away. One look at Natalie told him why Adrian said so.

Sure, Natalie resembled Alice, but Ruben could see the differences right away.

Natalie didn't have that timid look in her eyes that Alice had when she looked at Ruben. Even though Natalie was a bit scared, her eyes were calm and fearless, which Ruben appreciated.

Plus, Natalie's eyes didn't have that hidden greed and vanity that Alice's did. Those traits were hard to hide, and trying too hard to conceal them would just make them more obvious.

Ruben waved his hand. "I'll have a word with Natalie alone."

Adrian was a bit worried, afraid Ruben might give Natalie a hard time.

Ruben chuckled and sighed, "Are you afraid I'd be tough on a girl?"

Natalie nodded to Adrian, reassuring him. Only then did Adrian leave.

Now, it was just Natalie and Ruben in the study.

Ruben picked up his coffee, took a sip, and said to Natalie, "Come closer. My eyes aren't what they used to be."

Natalie walked over. "If you can't see well, let me help you to the couch."

She helped Ruben up, which surprised him. He didn't expect the girl who seemed a bit scared of him to take the initiative. Since he turned 80, his legs hadn't been great. He followed Natalie and sat down on the couch.

Natalie said, "The couch is more comfortable. You'll feel better here. The chair's too hard for you."

Ruben smiled, "That's true. My back often hurts."

"Even if it hurts, you should get out and walk more. It's good for you," Natalie said. "I used to live with my grandmother. She was a village doctor and knew a bit about medicine. So I picked up some herbal knowledge."

Ruben remembered it was Natalie who treated him during his heart attack. "I like listening to you talk."

Ruben had spent half his life in the business world, facing financial crises and always coming out on top. He built the vast Howard Group, but the people who were with him were gone. Both of his wives had passed away. His children stayed by his side, but eventually, they had to attend to work matters.
