Chapter 819 Critically Ill

Melissa had a ton of questions, but there was no way she could ask them all at once.

Curtis walked over; after all, he was Alice's father. He looked at the nurse and demanded, "What's going on with Alice? Spill it! How did it get this bad? How did she get hurt?"

The nurse shot back, "You should be asking yourselves that. She's got an ectopic pregnancy and is bleeding heavily. The baby's a goner, and if it gets worse, she might lose her uterus, too. You guys need to make a decision, fast!"

Everyone was stunned, and Adrian jumped to his feet.

The last ultrasound didn't show anything about an ectopic pregnancy. How could this be?

Curtis quickly signed the papers.

Avery, a wreck, sat crying in a chair while Curtis paced the hallway.

An hour later, they wheeled Alice out.

Her eyes were shut, and she looked pale as a ghost.

In the ICU, everyone else had to stay outside.

Avery peered through the window at Alice, looking frail and pale, tears streaming down her face. She wanted Alice to marry into the Howard family, but her life was way more important.

Doctors and nurses were rushing in and out. Claire grabbed one of the doctors and asked, "How's Alice doing?"

The doctor, the top obstetrician at City Hospital and also the deputy director, knew these people were important. But Alice's condition was dire, with the ectopic pregnancy causing massive bleeding. They'd only managed basic emergency treatment, and it was touch and go. The doctor had done her best but was worried Alice's uterus might not make it.

She explained everything to Claire.

Everyone was in shock.

Melissa said, "Didn't Alice have an ultrasound before? It didn't show an ectopic pregnancy."

The director frowned. "How could that be? Which hospital did the check-up? How could they mess up something so basic?"

Melissa pressed her lips together.

Even though Alice was still in danger, something felt off. But seeing Alice like this, she couldn't ask more questions.

Claire sighed softly. She had been so excited about this baby but never expected this.

Maybe Alice and the Howard family just weren't meant to be.

It was bad enough that they had lost the first baby. Now came an ectopic pregnancy with life-threatening complications.

Claire felt dizzy and staggered back. Adrian caught her, looking worried. "Mom, are you okay?"

Melissa instructed, "Adrian, take your mom home. I'll stay here. Go back and tell Ruben and the others. Also, look into the hospital that did Alice's prenatal check-ups. How could they screw up this badly?"

Curtis took a deep breath. "We definitely need an investigation. How could a professional hospital miss an ectopic pregnancy? What if something happens to Alice? She's my only daughter!"

Avery was half-crying, half-fainting, and Curtis helped her sit on the bench outside.

Adrian took Claire back to the Howard Mansion.

After all the chaos, it was evening, and the Howard Mansion was now empty of relatives and friends, just the Howard family left.

Ruben hadn't rested, waiting for Adrian to return. He was worried about Alice, too.
