Chapter 676 People Aspire to Higher Positions
Yvonne bounced outta the trailer, and Natalie said to Heather, "Everyone's tryna climb that ladder. Yvonne's making the right move; we all wanna level up and gotta grab every shot we get."
Heather said disapprovingly, "Natalie, you could be more harsh to Yvonne. Seriously, it's not worth it. You've always had her back. If she hadn't picked Mindy, you'd be boosting her up. She's so ungrateful."
Natalie shrugged, "Everyone's got their own dreams. I respect her choice."
Lately, Natalie's been on set non-stop. When she's not filming, she's got no other gigs. Every afternoon after wrapping up and heading back to the hotel, she would practice her expressions and lines in front of the mirror.
Time flew by. Friday was the big scene.
Natalie's character, Zoey, was about to uncover the truth and have a showdown with the bad guy on the rooftop. Zoey and the antagonist threw down, and she got pushed off the building. Right then, Landon swooped in to save her.
Landon grabbed Zoey's hand and pulled her up. Just as he did, the antagonist shanked Landon in the back. Landon, bleeding out and barely hanging on, still shielded Zoey.
Then the cops showed up and took down the bad guy.
Rising Winds was all about cracking a mystery, with barely any focus on the romance between the leads.
The male lead was a newbie cop, and the female lead was fresh outta college. Both were pretty green and not great with people. They were just two regular folks who helped each other out and ended up solving a big case.
The original story didn't dive deep into their romance.
But book fans went wild with their imaginations because both characters were super likable. They saved each other.
Even though the original didn't spotlight the romance, the killer plot and character arcs made them the dream couple for tons of fans.
To nail the right vibe and make the film pop for new viewers, Matthew hit up the original author a bunch during the scriptwriting. The movie kept the mystery and suspense but threw in an extra twenty percent of romance.
Zoey and Landon got to know each other while solving the case, naturally and beautifully, making everyone root for their relationship.
And this scene was the peak of Zoey and Landon's romance.
In the original, Zoey watched Landon get hurt saving her. Zoey, whose parents split when she was a kid, was a bit of a loner. After college, she had no friends, couldn't say no to anything, and liked her peace and quiet. She'd been on her own forever.
Suddenly, someone got hurt saving her, and Zoey was floored.
On the rooftop, Natalie sat on the ground, holding the bloodied Samuel, slipping right into character. "Officer Landon."
Natalie's voice was shaky and soft. If her lips hadn't moved, no one would've known she was talking.
Samuel looked at Natalie. "As long as you're okay, Zoey. You promised me we'd go out for barbecue."
That was a promise between Zoey and Landon.
Once the case was cracked, they were gonna hit up every barbecue joint in the city, starting from the south side. There were over thirty spots, and they planned to hit them all.
Natalie's face went blank.
Natalie widened her eyes, staring at the blood on her hands, watching Landon close his eyes in her arms.
Natalie screamed, "Landon, Landon."
The sound of an ambulance siren wailed.
