Chapter 1347 The Longed-for and Cherished Happiness

Rachel hurried over, her face stern. "Hey, what do you think you're doing? Where are your parents? Who taught you to be so naughty?"

She put her hands on her hips and snatched the sunglasses from a chubby boy's hand. "Didn't your parents teach you any manners?"

Rachel could be quite intimidating when she was angry, and the kids, a bit scared, exchanged glances before running off.

She watched them go and shook her head in exasperation.

Turning around, she looked at Elmer.

Elmer's fists were clenched tightly, and his shoulders were trembling.

Rachel suddenly felt a pang in her chest. She hesitated for a moment before taking Elmer's hand. "Those kids are gone now. Don't be upset."

Elmer looked up at her, his voice hoarse. "Does it really take that long to get a coffee?"

Rachel remembered that this was all her fault. She knew Elmer couldn't see, yet she had left him alone. She hugged him, gently patting his back.

Elmer was tall, and Rachel had to stand on her tiptoes to reach him.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I won't leave you alone like that again," she said softly, her fingers gently stroking his back.

Elmer gradually calmed down. He didn't push her away. He wanted to hold her, but when his fingers touched her shoulder, they fell weakly to his side. The faint scent of roses from the woman in his arms seemed to ignite his withered soul. He knew Rachel wouldn't stay by his side forever; she was always thinking of ways to escape.

He lowered his gaze.

This woman was like a toy he wanted to possess, but he couldn't control it.

Yet, he couldn't bear to break it.

Rachel, unaware of Elmer's inner turmoil, continued to gently pat his back, trying to soothe him. Then she started telling him a story.

"An elephant went to the bathroom but forgot to bring toilet paper. So, he looked at the little white rabbit next to him and asked, 'Do you shed fur?' The little white rabbit said, 'No, I don't.' So, the elephant picked up the little white rabbit and wiped his butt. The next day, the elephant was eating but forgot to bring a napkin. So, he looked at the little squirrel next to him and asked, 'Do you shed fur?' The little squirrel said, 'No, I don't.' So, the elephant picked up the little squirrel and wiped his mouth. The little squirrel said, 'I was the little white rabbit yesterday.'"

Rachel finished the story and burst into laughter.

She had a low threshold for humor.

Elmer, though he didn't find the story funny, couldn't help but smile a little at the sound of her bell-like laughter.

Rachel looked at him. "Isn't it funny? I laughed for a long time when I first heard it."

She made a V with her fingers and placed them at the corners of his mouth, lifting them up. "There, that's better. You look so handsome when you smile. You should smile more often."

When she let go, his lips still held the shape of a smile, but it didn't look forced.

Elmer thought, maybe this was God's gift to him.

At the end of his life, he had been given someone so bright and warm.

No matter how long this girl stayed by his side, he wanted to cherish the time they had. This happiness was something he longed for and treasured.
