Chapter 13 The Glamorous Mrs. Howard
When Natalie woke up, she found herself back at home. Avery, for reasons unknown, had given her expensive medication to help her recover. After a few days of rest, the pain in her back had lessened, but every time she touched the scar, it felt like a mark of shame.
"Natalie, I've done what I promised. There's nothing more I can do," Avery said, lounging in the living room with a smug look on her face as she sipped her coffee.
Avery had brought in specialists to check on his mother right after the engagement party, but the final verdict was still a kidney transplant.
Natalie clenched her hands at her sides and said expressionlessly, "Thank you, Mrs. Cullen."
Avery chuckled and said, "Don't worry too much. As long as you keep playing 'Alice,' I'll continue to help with the treatment."
Natalie's eyes widened in surprise as she asked, "Keep playing Alice?"
"Yes, Alice will be in the hospital for a while. Adrian might look for her occasionally. You need to handle her phone and keep up the act," Avery said, standing up and walking behind her. She pressed hard on her still-healing scar.
Natalie winced in pain as her cold voice whispered in her ear, "But if you get any funny ideas, your mom's treatment ends here."
Natalie knew resistance was futile. She swallowed her anger and said, "I agree."
"Good girl," Avery said, laughing softly and watching her break into a cold sweat from the pain. "I didn't expect that scar would come in handy."
Natalie didn't respond. She understood the undertone in Avery's words. However, even with a scar identical to Alice's, she would never be Alice.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Alice lay obediently in bed as doctors and nurses carefully applied medication. She had woken up the day after the engagement party. She had hives all over her body, even on her face, and they itched terribly.
The doctor had said it could take a week to recover if she was lucky, or over ten days if not. She was frustrated and had been scolded by Avery for almost causing a scene.
"Engagement party, I missed it due to alcohol allergy," Alice muttered, covering her face in regret. "What day is it? Where's Adrian?"
Avery tried to soothe her. "You were unconscious at that time. Your dad and I had no other option but to let Natalie stand in for you at the engagement party. Luckily, nobody realized."
"Mom, how could you do this?" Alice's voice rose, then she remembered Curtis was there and lowered it. "How could you let Natalie replace me?"
She felt a wave of panic wash over her. She had worked so hard for this. What if Adrian found out? After all, it was Natalie who had slept with Adrian!
