Chapter 048 The Unbearable Loss
A guttural cry tore from Natalie's throat as the cold instruments invaded her body, igniting a searing pain that turned her face a ghastly shade of white. Her pupils trembled, mirroring the fear and agony coursing through her veins.
The recent news of her pregnancy had been a beacon of joy, but now, that light was being snuffed out. The physical torment was a cruel echo of her emotional trauma, and with a final whimper, Natalie succumbed to the darkness, slipping into unconsciousness.
In the realm of her dreams, Natalie found herself cradling a blood-soaked infant, its wails piercing her heart. But in the blink of an eye, the child was gone, replaced by the indifferent figure of Adrian. She stumbled towards him, her voice trembling with desperation, "Please... save our child."
Adrian, however, remained unmoved. He pushed her away with a harsh shove, his hand clamping around her throat as he spat, "You think you're worthy of bearing my child?"
The shock of his words was a cold slap to her face, and panic clawed at her heart as she watched him walk away with Alice, his parting words echoing in her ears, "That child deserved to die!"
"No, please!" Natalie's plea was swallowed by the void.
Her eyes snapped open, her body slick with a cold sweat. A slight movement drew the attention of the female doctor, who approached her bedside, "You've been asleep for a day. You've lost a substantial amount of blood, but the fluids will help you recover. Rest when you get home."
Natalie sat up, her hand instinctively reaching for her abdomen. Her child was gone, replaced by a hollow emptiness that echoed within her. The doctor looked on with concern, offering words of comfort, "Miss, you're still young. I'm sure you’ll have children in the future."
A bitter smile played on Natalie's lips. She felt as if she might never have children again. Closing her eyes and leaning against the bed, she felt exhaustion seep into her bones. After the IV fluids had run their course, her legs were so weak that she could barely stand. It took a considerable effort for her to muster the strength to walk out of the clinic.
She found herself alone on the bustling city streets. Cars whizzed past her, their noise a dull hum in her ears. Suddenly, a wave of dizziness washed over her, and she sank onto a nearby bench.
At the street corner, an LED screen played the day’s entertainment news. The rumored mysterious heir of the Howard Group had spent millions of dollars to book the Oasis Hotel, Vachilit's most expensive gem, inviting numerous guests to celebrate his fiancée's birthday...
Natalie rose to her feet, taking a few bewildered steps towards the LED screen. Her world spun around her, and before she knew it, she was standing in the middle of the road. Adrian's words from before his trip to Verono echoed in her ears, "Alice, I'll have a surprise for you when I get back." She wondered, 'Is this the surprise he prepared for Alice?'
A laugh bubbled up from her throat, growing louder as the screen switched to other ads. Her gaze grew distant, her laughter echoing in the empty street. A car screeched to a halt beside her, the driver cursing, "Are you trying to get yourself killed, you lunatic?!"
Natalie was jolted back to reality.
Her phone began to ring, the shrill sound cutting through the night air — it was Bella. She answered the call, and before she could utter a word, Bella's anxious voice filled her ear. "Natalie, your mother's gone missing!"
"What?"
"I went to visit my brother at the hospital because he broke his leg, and I thought I'd check on her, but the hospital said your mother was discharged. How could they let her leave when she's not yet recovered?"
Natalie could barely process Bella's words; her face drained of color.
A chilling thought crossed her mind.
"Avery! She must have hidden my mother away because she doesn't trust me!" she thought, her heart pounding in her chest.
