Chapter 861 Who Knows What the Future Holds
"Claire, come on, help me out here. I really wanna go to this debutante ball. Just let Rachel take me along so I can get some experience," Alice pleaded sweetly.
Claire nodded in agreement.
But after hanging up, Claire didn't ask Rachel. Instead, she called her good friend Amanda Robinson. Getting an invite was a breeze for Amanda.
Amanda even said she'd tell Rebecca to set aside an invitation and scolded her for forgetting. "Alice is your future daughter-in-law. Rebecca must've been too busy to remember Alice's invite."
Claire chuckled. "Rebecca's juggling a huge company and organizing the ball. Plus, Alice was in the hospital recently, so it's understandable."
They both found a way to smooth things over, keeping it classy.
Since Claire asked personally, Amanda couldn't say no.
After hanging up with Claire, Amanda called Rebecca. "Rebecca, how's everything at the company?"
Amanda knew Rebecca's company was recently hit with a plagiarism scandal. Amanda had been Rebecca's first supporter when she started her business years ago. Now, U&M was a big name.
'I never thought Rebecca would face this. She's always been so careful. How could she let a plagiarized product be the season's highlight?' Amanda wondered.
Rebecca was stressed about it too. "Mom, if you have something to say, just say it."
"Claire called, hoping you could give Alice an invite to the ball. Even though Alice was in the hospital, you should've prepared an invite for her," Amanda reminded Rebecca, in more gentle tone.
They couldn't let a small issue strain their relationship with the Howard family. Who knew if Alice might say something to Claire and stir up trouble?
"Claire called you? Mom, Claire's not the type to ask for a ball invite. It must've been Alice who asked her, and then Claire asked you."
Amanda was in the greenhouse, watering plants. "It's because you forgot to give it."
"I didn't forget. Alice just doesn't deserve it. This ball isn't for just anyone. If Alice wants to come, she can find someone with an invite to bring her," Rebecca said, standing her ground.
"You did it on purpose?" Amanda sighed. "Rebecca, Alice might come from a poor family, but she's the future mistress of the Howard family."
"Who knows what the future holds?"
"Alice is already pregnant. We saw it ourselves at the Howard mansion this Christmas. The Howard family has clearly accepted her."
"I heard she had a miscarriage," Rebecca said pointedly.
"Miscarriage?" Amanda was shocked.
