Chapter 716 Ten Million, Breakup Fee
Stifling a yawn, Natalie got to her feet and stretched, her shoulders popping. She glanced at the ten million bucks in cash on the table, ready to stash it away. But then it hit her—she had to dump Adrian later.
She splashed some cold water on her face to shake off the sleepiness. The chill woke her up a bit.
Her stomach growled. She opened the fridge and grabbed a couple of tomatoes, planning to whip up some Tomato Spaghetti. Just then, she heard the door creak open.
Adrian strolled in, saying, "I grabbed you a hot dog and some oatmeal on the way."
As he walked over, his eyes locked onto the mountain of cash on the coffee table. His jaw dropped. "Where'd all this cash come from? What's wrong?"
Natalie had already sliced half the tomatoes. The smell of the hot dog caught her attention.
She walked in the kitchen, put the hot dog on a plate, and looked up at Adrian. "Claire gave it to me."
"What?" Adrian blinked, thinking he misheard.
"My mom came to see you?" In Adrian's mind, Claire wasn't the type to do that.
"Yeah, yesterday." Natalie walked over. "Ten million bucks, breakup fee."
Adrian's face darkened. "Why didn't you have Derek tell me she came to see you?"
Natalie shrugged. "Didn't think it was necessary. You couldn't do anything right away, and she's your mom. Didn't want to stir up drama between you two because of me. Didn't want to be the one causing beef."
Natalie knew the score. No matter how much Adrian liked her, he couldn't really go against his mom.
Adrian frowned. "So, you just took it?"
"Yeah, I took the money to do the job." Natalie stood in front of Adrian. "Mr. Howard, let's break up."
She said it half-jokingly, a smile playing on her red lips.
Adrian's brow twitched.
His big left hand clamped onto Natalie's wrist, holding back his anger. He raised his right hand and gently pinched her chin. "Say that again."
Natalie winced a bit. She could tell Adrian was pissed.
His eyes were dark and cold, one hand gripping her slender wrist, the other pinching her chin, lifting it slightly. "Natalie, I'll give you twenty million to take back what you just said."
Natalie pressed her lips together. "You're hurting me."
Adrian loosened his grip a bit, seeing her eyes redden. He felt a mix of helplessness and regret, especially seeing her chin turn red. He wished he hadn't lost his cool.
Natalie's skin was so delicate that even a slight pinch left a mark.
Suddenly, she hugged Adrian's neck. "Are you mad?"
Seeing his gloomy face, she stood on tiptoe and pulled him down. Adrian lowered his head slightly, and she planted a sweet, soft kiss on his lips. Her voice was gentle. "Don't be mad. I took the money, so I gotta do the job. I have a reputation to keep."
Most of Adrian's anger melted away after her kiss. He couldn't quite explain why he was so mad. When he heard her say she wanted to break up, the fume just rose up.
He said hoarsely, "I didn't ask you to take it."
"Ten million bucks, it's the first time I've seen so much money." Her voice was soft, but there was no greed in her eyes, just indifference.
