Chapter 051 Dreaming
Adrian stole a glance at his wristwatch, noting with satisfaction that there was an abundance of time left. "Alright," he murmured.
His original plan was to return the following day, but he had decided to hasten his journey, intending to surprise Alice with his early arrival. The car hummed smoothly beneath him, the world outside the window blurring into a soothing backdrop.
Suddenly, a figure materialized in his line of sight—a woman garbed in a light brown dress. Brice, his long-time assistant and skilled driver, reacted instantly, slamming his foot onto the brakes. The car jerked to a halt.
Brice was the first to break the silence, his eyes flicking towards Adrian. "Mr. Howard, are you hurt?"
Adrian responded with a dismissive shake of his head, choosing not to dwell on the incident. Brice had been his right-hand man for years, and his driving skills were impeccable.
Outside, the rhythmic patter of rain against the car roof filled the silence.
Suddenly, Brice's voice cut through the rain's steady drumming. "Mr. Howard, it's Natalie."
A frown creased Adrian's forehead, a flicker of something uncharacteristic crossing his usually impassive face. It was gone as quickly as it appeared.
Natalie was sprawled on the wet pavement, the rain drenching her hair and streaming down her cheeks. Her clothes clung to her body, heavy with rainwater.
For a moment, it seemed as if the rain had paused.
Her gaze landed on a pair of black leather shoes. Slowly, she raised her head, her eyes trailing up the creaseless black dress pants, finally resting on a familiar face.
Adrian.
Natalie was convinced she was dreaming. "Why am I seeing him here?" she wondered aloud. "I must be dreaming."
A self-deprecating smile tugged at her lips. "Why are you here..." Her voice was barely a whisper, blending with the rain as if she were talking to herself.
"Weren't you going to surprise her? Today is a good day. But I feel so awful. It feels like I can't breathe. Adrian, am I dreaming? Everything that happened today is a terrible nightmare. When I wake up, everything that happened in the dream will disappear." Natalie's soft voice dissipated in the rain, her words swallowed by the downpour.
Adrian studied her pale face, her bright eyes clouding over. He was about to respond when she suddenly shut her eyes and collapsed.
In an instant, Adrian dropped his umbrella, catching her before she hit the ground. He cradled Natalie in his arms, his suit quickly becoming soaked by the relentless rain. Brice, witnessing this, hurriedly picked up the discarded umbrella, offering to hold it over Adrian. "Mr. Howard, let me hold Ms. Teeger."
Adrian shot him a cold glance, wordlessly carrying Natalie into the car. He could feel the heat radiating off her body, her forehead burning with fever. He studied her pale face, as fragile as a porcelain doll displayed in a shop window.
After a moment's silence, Adrian issued his instructions. “Head to Bayview Villa. Call Colby, ask him to come over.”
Brice was momentarily taken aback but quickly nodded in agreement, "Okay!"
Adrian's decision to head to Bayview Villa meant he would miss Alice's birthday party. Bayview Villa was Adrian's private residence, his sanctuary before he purchased Riverside Villa for Alice, in anticipation of their impending marriage.
Half an hour later, they arrived at Bayview Villa.
Colby, a renowned doctor, gave Natalie a quick examination. He frowned, his face stern. "You called me in such a rush just because she has a fever? I just got back from an international medical conference. Do you have any idea that I'm dealing with jet lag?"
Adrian, now changed into fresh clothes, sat on the sofa, one leg crossed over the other. He looked at Colby and asked, "How is she?"
