Chapter 402 Natalie's Vigilance

Natalie rolled back home, arms loaded with bags. The supermarket was having a killer sale, so she snagged a bunch of stuff to cook and some fresh fruits and veggies. She stuffed everything into the fridge and headed to the living room, only to find Rosalie was not home.

She whipped out her phone, ready to hit up Rosalie to see where she was and when she'd be back, but her screen was blowing up with news notifications.

Every browser she opened was plastered with headlines about the charity gala drama, stuff like "Alice in a coma after saving Claire" and "The Howard Group mourns a child."

Natalie bit her lip. Her gut told her Rosalie had probably gone to the hospital.

At the hospital, it was a madhouse. Reporters and media folks were swarming outside, desperate for any scoop. Some sneaky ones had even slipped into the inpatient department.

But the bodyguards had that on lock.

Rosalie, looking all frail and worn out, made her way to the inpatient department. The bodyguards let her through without a fuss.

She got off the elevator and headed straight for Alice's room.

This was the VIP ward, where the bills were sky-high, so it was pretty quiet. Just a few nurses and doctors milling around.

Rosalie didn't need to ask where Alice's room was. She spotted four bodyguards outside room 703, but she couldn't get in. She started to feel a bit jittery.

She hung around, catching the eye of one of the bodyguards.

"Who are you, and what are you doing here?" the bodyguard asked, eyeing her up.

Rosalie didn't look like one of those nosy paparazzi.

"I, uh..." Rosalie stammered. "I'm a servant of the Cullen family. How's Ms. Cullen?"

The bodyguard hadn't seen her before but didn't seem too suspicious. Still, he blocked her way. "That's not your business. If you're a servant, you should head back. Another servant's already in there taking care of her."

"Just tell me, how is Ms. Cullen? Is she awake? Is she badly hurt?" Rosalie asked, her voice shaky from the news reports.

The bodyguard gave her a look. "Don't make this hard for us. You should go back."

Just then, the door opened, and Curtis stepped out. "What's all the noise about?" he asked.

"Mr. Cullen, your servant is here," the bodyguard said, turning to Curtis.

Curtis looked at Rosalie, a bit taken aback.

Rosalie hadn't expected to see Curtis. She looked away but couldn't shake her worry for Alice, so she stayed put.

Curtis walked over and motioned for the bodyguard to step aside.

"Rosalie, what are you doing here?" he asked.

He seemed to know this wasn't the place for a chat and suggested, "Let's go to the conference room." Curtis coughed lightly and whispered, "Avery's in the room too."

If Avery found out Rosalie was here, it would be a whole new mess.

He'd been butting heads with Avery for months, and now, because of Alice, things had cooled down a bit. He didn't want to stir the pot again. After all, they'd been married for years, and he didn't want to ruin the lingering affection.

Rosalie nodded and followed Curtis to the conference room.

"Mr. Cullen, how's Ms. Cullen? I saw the news; it said she was hurt," Rosalie asked, her voice full of concern.

Curtis sighed. "She hasn't woken up yet, but she's out of the ICU. Rosalie, I appreciate how much you care about Alice. You've always been good to her."

Rosalie had watched Alice grow up, just like Curtis had watched Natalie grow up. There was still some affection there.

Curtis asked, "How's Natalie doing lately? How are you both holding up?"

"Natalie and I are doing fine," Rosalie said. "Ms. Cullen will pull through. Since Mrs. Cullen is here, I'll head out. I don't want to cause any more drama between you and Mrs. Cullen because of me."

Rosalie turned to leave.

Curtis called after her, "Rosalie, I..."
