Chapter 398 Alice's Miscarriage

Ruben was on edge, no doubt.

Claire's leg was messed up, and Adrian told Melissa to get her patched up.

Adrian was pacing by the OR door, waiting.

Time dragged on, and finally, the OR door swung open, and the doc stepped out. "Sign here."

Everyone rushed over.

As soon as Avery saw the 'Consent for Treatment' form, she blacked out and hit the floor.

Curtis signed the form, his hands shaking like crazy. Alice was his only kid.

The doc took the form and went back into the OR, the door closing behind him. Adrian checked the clock outside; Alice had been in there for two hours.

He clenched his fist and told Melissa, "Auntie, you take Grandpa home; I'll stick around."

Ruben shook his head. "No way, I'm staying right here."

About an hour later, Alice was wheeled out. The doc said, "We did our best, but we couldn't save the baby. Ms. Cullen lost a lot of blood, has fractured ribs, a broken arm, multiple bruises, and a moderate concussion. She's being moved to the ICU for observation."

Ruben shut his eyes.

Claire mumbled, "As long as Alice is okay."

They kinda knew this was coming when they got there. Alice was almost nine months pregnant, and with all that bleeding and damage, the baby didn't stand a chance. But hearing the doc say it still hit Ruben hard.

At the ICU entrance, Curtis, looking beat, told the Howard family, "You all go home; Avery and I will stay here."

After all, she was their daughter, and now that Alice had lost her baby, he didn't know how the Howard family would treat her.

Claire said, "Alice saved me. If it weren't for me, she and her baby would be fine. How can I go home with peace of mind?"

Avery had woken up by now, and Claire's words snapped her out of her grief. The baby was gone, and there was no proof. The baby wasn't Adrian's to begin with, and now it was conveniently gone, making the Howard family feel guilty. Initially, she was worried and sad for Alice, but now she suddenly realized, could this have been Alice's plan all along?

She immediately followed Claire's lead. "Alice always cared about this baby. She was about to meet her baby, and now it's gone. How heartbroken will she be when she wakes up..."

Ruben stood up. "We're sorry for your loss. It's our fault."

Avery leaned into Curtis's arms and cried.

Adrian pressed his lips together. "Grandpa, you all go home first; I'll stay here."

Natalie called Adrian, but he didn't answer. She thought it was fine that Adrian didn't come to her. Putting her phone aside, she focused on the script in her hand.

Mindy had gotten her a role in a series, the lead in a single-episode story, filming for a month, starting next Tuesday.

She looked at the character description and was very satisfied. Mindy was really sharp in choosing the script. Although it was a single-episode story, her role was a highlight, part of a detective series. She was a key character in one episode, with a solid script and a reliable team.

She had an acting class in the afternoon, arranged by Mindy. She glanced at Rosalie, who was napping, and quietly left.

As she stepped out of the elevator, her phone vibrated.

It was a message from Lizzy.

She hadn't saved Lizzy's number, but Lizzy had texted her before, so she remembered it.

Lizzy: [Natalie, are you available to take a call? I have something to tell you.]

Natalie thought for a moment and then dialed Lizzy's number.

Lizzy immediately said, "Natalie, Ms. Cullen had a miscarriage. Do you know about this?"

Natalie had just stepped out of the apartment complex, the warm sunlight falling on her. She suddenly stopped. "What did you say?"
