Chapter 778 Not Afraid of Death

Derek looked at the leader and said, "This pregnant lady's in bad shape. If we don't get her to a hospital now, she might not make it. How about you let these two customers go, and we'll stay here?"

The leader took a drag from his cigarette and eyed Derek. "Oh, really?"

He chuckled, thinking Derek was some undercover rookie. "You guys nuts? Even if you swap places, those people won't remember you. If you die, they'll just be relieved they're alive and maybe cry a bit. Is it worth it? That cop outside, he's your captain, right? This is reckless."

Derek shook his head. "I'm not a cop. Just a civilian. You want money. We want to live. You've got the gold, so why hurt anyone?"

The leader pointed at the pregnant woman. "You know who she is?"

Derek looked confused. "No idea."

The leader smirked. "She's Trevor's wife."

Derek frowned. "Who's Trevor?"

The leader seemed surprised. "You're really not a cop? You don't know Police Chief Trevor?"

Derek sighed. "Told you, I'm not. Still don't believe me?"

The leader nodded. "Guess the cop outside is honest enough not to send one of his own in here, or I'd have shot him!"

Suddenly, the female doctor shouted, "She's bleeding!"

Derek turned to the leader. "Whether she's the chief's wife or just a civilian, it's two lives. You don't want that on your conscience, do you?"

The leader hesitated, noticing the woman's worsening condition.

"You can help her," he said. "But she has to stay. You can ask for meds from outside."

Derek, in no need to push his luck, agreed.

Soon, the meds were brought in. The female doctor quickly stopped the bleeding. The woman started to look better. The doctor glanced at Derek, feeling oddly reassured by his presence despite his thin frame.

Natalie leaned against the window, watching the chaos outside. Reporters had swarmed the scene, filming the jewelry store and pestering the police. The growing media presence meant the rescue had to succeed. There were eight hostages inside, plus Derek and the doctor, making ten lives at stake.

The criminals hadn't let the pregnant woman or the other customer go, clearly stalling.

Campbell was getting nervous. The hostages were still inside, along with Derek and the doctor.

"No shooting," Campbell ordered. "Clear the area and get a negotiator in here!"

Just then, the criminals released one hostage. It wasn't the pregnant woman but a young girl, probably a high schooler. The police quickly brought her over. "You okay, Miss?"

The girl, pale and shaken, nodded.

People around started murmuring.

"She must be scared out of her mind."

"Glad she's safe. Hope the pregnant woman is okay."

"She looks so young. Hope she doesn't get traumatized."

The girl, trembling, said, "I just want to go home. Please, let me go home."

A police officer looked at Campbell, who nodded. "Take her home."
