Chapter 33 The Shameless Woman
Rosalie's pale, chapped lips moved slightly, and her eyes lighted up. "Alice, no, Ms. Cullen, what brings you to the hospital?"
Natalie glanced at her mother. She'd been busy playing "Alice" for the past few days and finally had a chance to visit Rosalie. But as soon as she arrived, she learned her mom was out for tests. Before she could even see her, Avery had rushed her to play Alice.
In just a few days, Rosalie seemed to have lost even more weight. Natalie's eyes welled up with tears, but hearing her mom call her "Alice," she bit her lip and held back.
Supressing her emotions, she replied, "Yeah, I'm here to visit someone."
No matter how hard she tried, Natalie couldn't bring herself to boss her mom around like Alice did. She just kept her tone cold and avoided looking at Rosalie.
Rosalie didn't seem to notice that. She was thrilled to see Alice, her pale face smiling. Then her gaze shifted to Adrian beside her. "Ms. Cullen, who's this?"
Natalie's lips trembled, and she clenched her fists. "This is my fiancé."
"I saw the news. Mr. Howard, right? That's wonderful," Rosalie said, genuinely happy.
Then she muttered something under her breath, but in the small elevator, it was clear as day. "I wish Natalie could be this happy too."
Hearing that, Natalie almost lost control of her tears. She dug her nails into her palm, hoping the pain would help her stay in control.
Adrian's eyes briefly flicked to Rosalie before looking away.
When the elevator doors opened, Rosalie said goodbye to "Alice," still looking pleased. Natalie kept her face cold, not daring to look at Rosalie's retreating figure. In that moment, she almost wanted to run out, help Rosalie back to her room, and take care of her.
Despite her best efforts to control her emotions, Adrian noticed.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Unable to hide her feelings, Natalie forced a smile. "Nothing. She's Natalie's mom. We look alike, so sometimes even her mom gets confused."
When she looked up and met Adrian's probing gaze, she felt a pang of guilt but didn't look away, knowing it would only confirm her unease.
"Rosalie's good to me. Seeing her sick makes me sad," she said, trying to sound firm.
"Okay," Adrian replied, his tone unreadable.
When Adrian stepped out of the the elevator, Natalie felt a sense of relief as well as a twinge of disappointment.
'He loathes me,' she thought. 'He doesn't even want to talk about me.'
What Natalie didn't know was that Adrian was thinking about her. It was the first time he'd really looked at "Alice." They did look similar, but their bone structure was different.
He'd never noticed this before. No wonder he always thought of Natalie when he was with Alice. And on that night at Ardentia University's anniversary, Natalie had been under him, calling his name.
He'd been drugged, but he wasn't completely out of it. They were both consumed by desire. It wasn't Natalie's first time. He saw through her materialistic nature and didn't want to dig deeper. It disgusted him.
He couldn't believe he'd been so blind.
He'd thought Natalie was interesting, but she drugged him to get close to him, banking on her resemblance to Alice to confuse him in the heat of the moment.
With all his experience, he had been fooled by such a shameless woman.
How laughable!
