Chapter 1388 The Light of Dawn

Natalie had taken time off work to spend a couple of days with Adrian exploring the island. With its pleasant climate and absence of winter, it was a perfect vacation spot, attracting tourists year-round.

Rachel opened her eyes, her face framed by the breathing apparatus. She tried to move but found her joints stiff and uncooperative. Staring at the white ceiling, she heard the rhythmic beeping of machines monitoring her heart and blood pressure. She realized she was in a hospital. She had thought she was heading to heaven, but she was still alive.

Rachel attempted to sit up, only to find herself unable to move. The smell of disinfectant filled her nostrils. Then, she heard a noise followed by footsteps approaching.

"She's awake! Patient in room 601 is awake!" The hurried footsteps grew louder as several people gathered around her bed.

A doctor examined her briefly. "The patient is awake. She's going to be okay." He asked her a few questions, to which Rachel responded with nods and shakes of her head.

About ten minutes later, a man walked in. He grasped her hand tightly. Like a ray of dawn, Rachel's fingers trembled instinctively before gripping back firmly. The darkness before her began to fade, replaced by a bright light.

She looked at the person in front of her. A pale, delicate face — it was Elmer.

He looked exhausted, his lips dry. Seeing her awake seemed to bring him back to life. She opened her mouth, as if trying to say something. Elmer's eyes lit up with joy. He knelt down on one knee, holding Rachel's hand tightly. "I'm here, I'm right here."

Rachel's voice was hoarse. "Elmer…"

"Yeah, it's me."

"I'm not dead."

"With me here, I won't let anything happen to you," Elmer said. "It's my fault for not being by your side, for not finding you sooner." He pressed her hand to his cheek. "I won't let Mila get away with this!"

"I thought I died. I was wondering how you, my little blind man, managed to follow me here," Rachel's eyelashes trembled. "Elmer, I'm so tired, so sleepy."

"Rest. I'll stay right here with you."

Natalie had been at Redwood Isle for two days before heading to Suncrest City for filming. There had been no sign of Rachel on the island. Natalie knew Rachel's disappearance had her on edge, jumping at every little sound, thinking it might be Rachel. Adrian, too, was determined not to leave any corner unchecked.

For the next period, Natalie was busy filming. The series "My Heart, Bright Moon" wrapped up just before the new year. The next project was scheduled to start in a month. Most of the main cast had signed contracts for both parts, except Penelope, who had to finish early. Penelope's role initially had many highlights, but how much would actually make it to the final cut was uncertain.

Natalie flew back to Vachilit on Christmas Eve. The city was bustling with joy and celebration for the most important holiday of the year. Instead of heading straight to Bayview Villa, she asked the driver to take her to the Howard family home.

In previous years, the Howard family home would be lively and festive on this day. But stepping out of the car, Natalie felt none of the holiday cheer. She knew it was because the family was no longer whole.

Rachel was missing.

Rachel had been gone for four months now, with no news at all.

Claire, devastated by Rachel's disappearance, had fainted several times from crying, leaving her mentally and physically drained. She had been hospitalized for several days.
