Chapter 908 New Work
Natalie headed to York City to join the cast of a modern fantasy flick called "Yesterday's Mist."
This was Matthew's latest project, and it was a big deal for him. If the box office numbers were good, he'd finally break out of his usual typecast roles.
Natalie was pretty pumped about this gig. It was an ensemble film with standout male and female leads, and the characters had that signature 'Matthew' vibe. The director was Bronte Langley, one of the top female directors in the country and an old friend of Matthew's.
But Bronte was more known for her TV dramas. This film was a new challenge for her.
Natalie was doing a cameo as Gia, the sister of the female lead. Gia didn't show up much, but she was a key character.
The female lead was played by Azalea Marie, a popular actress who had clawed her way up from a rural background. She'd won Best Actress for an art film called "The Secret," but the past couple of years had been rough. None of her recent projects had been released, thanks to issues with co-stars and other setbacks.
Azalea was getting pretty anxious. It had been two years since her big win, and she had three or four projects stuck in limbo.
There wasn't much she could do about it. The cast and crew issues had really messed things up for her.
Some of her rivals even started saying she had bad luck and that her projects always got shelved, making it hard for her to land good scripts.
So, when she got the chance to join Matthew's "Yesterday's Mist," she jumped on it. Matthew's script was solid, and even though Bronte was more of a TV director, Azalea took a pay cut to be part of it.
Word was that Natalie, the breakout star from the Christmas hit, was playing Azalea's sister. Azalea wasn't thrilled about it.
Natalie was younger and might steal the spotlight.
But Azalea's agent talked her down. "Azalea, Natalie’s only got a few minutes of screen time and will be filming for just three days. She's just a cameo. How could she outshine you? Don't overthink it. Tomorrow you have a scene with Natalie, and you'll be working together all morning. You’re the best actress, and Natalie is just a newcomer. What are you afraid of?"
Even though Azalea was the best actress, the combined box office of all her films didn't match Natalie's one hit, "The Nameless Road." Naturally, Azalea was a bit anxious. Young stars were killing it, while she, at 30, was stuck, and her works were getting shelved.
"Yesterday's Mist" had just started filming.
Natalie had just joined the cast. That evening, she met up with Matthew for dinner. Matthew was excited to have her on board.
He went over the script and the characters with Natalie, focusing on her role.
Natalie had already read the script on her way there and knew it inside out. Even though it was just a cameo, she was all in. She had pored over the whole script and got a good grasp of all the characters.
She raised a glass with Matthew and had a drink.
