Chapter 400 Two People Who Look Alike
John clenched his fists tight for a sec, then looked at Carlos, who was kneeling on the ground. "Carlos, get up."
Carlos stood up. "Dad, we've been slaving away for the Howard family for years and got zilch. Are you really cool with this?"
John's eyes narrowed. He could only see with one eye, and right now, the sharp look in it was a stark contrast to the empty one. He stayed quiet for a few seconds. "Carlos, now's not the time."
Carlos felt a pang in his chest. "Dad!"
John seemed to know what was coming and cut him off. "Now's not the time to talk about this. I already covered up your fling with Alice. Adrian won't find out right away, but with his skills, it won't take long. I'll get the deputy director moved out of Vachilit ASAP. You need to keep Alice calm."
Carlos nodded.
John said, "You were way too reckless. If Alice had a change of heart, that chandelier could've hurt Claire when it fell. If Adrian lost it and Alice snitched, we'd all be toast!"
Carlos hadn't thought of that. John's words struck him with the gravity of the situation, sending a shiver of fear down his spine.
Back then, he just messed with the chandelier and had an ambulance ready outside.
He hadn't thought it through.
If Alice had freaked out and dodged the falling chandelier, and Claire got crushed, the fallout would've been unimaginable.
Carlos promised, "Dad, I'll be more careful from now on."
John looked at Carlos and sighed. "Alright, I've sorted things out with the hospital docs. That's the end of it. Keep an eye on Alice and make sure she stays quiet. We can't handle any more drama."
Carlos nodded. "Got it, Dad. Don't worry. Alice is on our side now. She won't dare to stir up trouble. She lost her kid and almost her life to save Claire. The charity gala had nearly a hundred big shots from Vachilit, and the major media were there. I've already spread the news through the media. Once she recovers, Adrian will feel obligated and pressured by public opinion to marry her. When she becomes Mrs. Howard, it'll benefit us too."
John knew this well. He always hid his ambition. In the Howard family, he seemed like a dignified, fair, and reliable butler. No one could see his true intentions.
He looked at Carlos approvingly. "You've done well on this."
Carlos hadn't expected the usually strict John to praise him. He immediately said, "Dad, Adrian doesn't like Alice at all. He's marrying her because she saved him, and he feels responsible. But he has no real feelings for her. Alice used the kid to tie him down. If the kid's gone, Adrian definitely won't marry her. She's about to give birth. Once the kid is born, the Cullen family is destined for a bad end. So she took this desperate step. Though it's risky, it not only got rid of the kid but also made Claire feel guilty towards her. With the media pressure, Adrian will have no choice but to marry her."
John nodded. "Good, Carlos, you're growing up. In the next few days, keep a close watch on Alice, but try to avoid Adrian. He's also in the hospital. Alright, you can go now. I have other stuff to handle."
"Dad, don't worry. I get it." Carlos turned to leave. When he reached the door, he stopped, looking hesitant. John said, "If you got something to say, just spit it out."
