Chapter 401 Public Pressure
Carlos said. "The Cullen fam's got this maid who looks just like Alice. My guys saw her hop into Adrian's ride."
John raised an eyebrow. "For real?"
Carlos nodded. "Yeah, they’re practically twins. At Adrian and Alice's engagement party, Alice had a bad reaction to booze and ended up in the hospital. So, this maid, Natalie, took her place."
John blinked. "She stood in for her?"
Carlos continued, "Yup, Alice was down for the count, so Natalie stepped in. No one at the party even noticed."
John was skeptical. "That was a ricky move. Do they really look that much alike?"
Carlos confirmed, "Totally."
John said, "Carlos, get me the deets on Natalie. I wanna check her out."
Carlos nodded. "On it."
After Carlos left, John pursed his lips and narrowed his hawk-like eyes.
He had to think about his own game plan.
The Howards, while not unkind to him, weren't exactly warm either. Ruben, in particular, never treated him like a son.
Maybe Alice could be useful.
Right then, news of an accident at the Howard family's charity gala was blowing up all over Vachilit.
Adrian's fiancée Alice got trapped under a chandelier trying to save Claire. She survived but lost her baby. She was about to pop any day now, which was a real bummer.
Meanwhile, the entrance of Sunrise Memorial Hospital was crawling with media.
They were all waiting for updates on Alice.
Word was, Alice was still out cold in the ICU, and Adrian hadn't left the hospital.
In the morning, Melissa headed to the hospital. The front was packed with media, so she had to sneak out the side door. As soon as she stepped out, four or five reporters swarmed her.
"Has Ms. Cullen woken up?"
"Was the accident with Ms. Cullen and Mrs. Howard on purpose or just a freak accident?"
"Could it have been a setup by someone, like Mr. Howard's secret lover or someone out for revenge?"
Melissa frowned at that last question. She shot a glare at the young reporter, who was probably just trying to make a name for herself with those spicy questions. Melissa's face darkened, "Miss, watch your tongue."
The young reporter, spooked by Melissa's glare, backed off a bit.
Melissa said, "This is a family matter and none of your business. We're looking into it, and if we find anything, we'll let the media know."
The Howard family had their own media connections.
As Melissa's car drove off, a few reporters started gossiping.
"Could it be a crime of passion? Think about it, Alice was almost nine months pregnant, ready to pop. Everyone knows once she had the baby, she’d marry into the Howard family."
"Who knows, but Alice got dealt a bad hand. Losing her baby, I wonder if the Howard family will still want her."
"Probably. Alice saved Mrs. Howard's life. Even without the baby, the Howard family wouldn't be that heartless."
"Who knows what goes on with rich folks. We should focus on getting the front-page scoop for this week's paper. There's a fat bonus for that."
"But we can't get any pics. We can't get in. The 12th floor of the hospital is locked down by the Howard family's bodyguards."
"We can still write about it, even if we can't get in. Stuff like a mistress hiring a hitman, or whether it was an accident or on purpose."
"That's kinda shady. We haven't seen any proof or done any interviews. Isn't that just spreading rumors?"
"Who cares? It's all about the buzz!"
