Chapter 100 We're Even

Susan's words ignited Cynthia. "What did you say? You wanna fight?" she snapped.

Cynthia raised her hand to hit Susan, but Susan grabbed her wrist. "Enough, Cynthia. I've tolerated you long enough. You want Seb, right? I've already let him go. Whether he marries you is your problem."

Susan knew from George that Cynthia wasn't part of the Anderson family, so Seb hadn't married her yet. She didn't care why; she was just tired of Cynthia's constant harassment.

After pushing Cynthia away, Susan headed for the door. "Even if Seb hasn't married me, he still dumped you!" Cynthia taunted.

Ignoring her, Susan walked out, thinking, 'If a dog bites me, I don't bite back. Not worth my time.'

As she neared the banquet hall, a large hand grabbed her wrist. Startled, she turned to see Seb's stern face. He pulled her through a door at the end of the corridor.

They ended up in the dimly lit backyard, a stark contrast to the bright banquet hall. "What do you want?" Susan demanded, shaking off Seb's hand.

"I need to talk to you," Seb said, frowning.

"I don't want to hear it!" Susan tried to leave, but Seb blocked her path. "Let go of me!"

Instead, Seb gripped her shoulders. "Do you know George has a girlfriend? You're interfering in their relationship."

Susan was stunned. She had no interest in George and didn't know he had a girlfriend. Seb misread her reaction, thinking she cared about George, which made him angrier. "George and Vivian have been together for years. Both families approve. You have no chance with him. Stay away, or you'll ruin your reputation and embarrass the Anderson family. I don't want to share a woman with George!"

His words infuriated Susan. It was as if he saw her as a prostitute. Unable to hold back, she slapped him hard.

Seb was stunned, staring at her with regret. He realized he had gone too far.

"Did you and Cynthia plan this? She belittles me, and now you insult me. What do you both want?" Susan shouted.

Seb frowned. "Did she give you trouble?"

"Don't play dumb. You know what Cynthia's like," Susan snapped.

Seb frowned. "I'll warn her to back off, but you need to stay away from George."

"That's none of your business!" Susan shot back.

"My patience has limits. Don't push me," Seb warned.

Susan sneered. "Seb, who do you think you are? We're divorced. You have no say in who I see. I like George, and I might even move in with him. I—"

Before she could finish, Seb slapped her.

Dazed, Susan staggered. Seb, realizing he hit her too hard, reached out to help, but she pushed him away.

Covering her face, Susan said, "You slapped me, I slapped you. We're even. From now on, we're strangers."

She ran off, covering her face. Seb looked at his hand, feeling a mix of regret and anger.

Susan rushed to the restroom. Seeing her swollen cheek in the mirror, she frowned. It was too noticeable to go back out, but she couldn't just leave.

After a moment, she took off her hairpin, letting her hair fall to cover her cheek. She quickly changed her hairstyle.

A few minutes later, Susan returned to the banquet hall in high heels.

The auction had just started. George saw her and approached. "Where did you go? I couldn't find you."

"I went to the restroom," Susan replied, feeling the burn on her face.

"Why did you change your hairstyle?" George asked, noticing her hair.

Susan's long hair now covered half her face, making her look even more alluring.

"The hairpin broke, so I had to," she said.

"It looks even prettier this way," George complimented.

Feeling shy, Susan lowered her eyes and saw Seb staring at her coldly. She quickly looked away, pretending not to notice him.

George led her into the crowd, where everyone was focused on the auctioneer. He put an arm around her shoulder, but Susan subtly moved away.

She remembered Seb saying George had a girlfriend and was discussing marriage. She didn't want any misunderstandings. Plus, George's concern for her seemed to be crossing the line of friendship, which made her uneasy.
