Chapter 380 Love is Eternal
A few days later, Susan got another call from Isabella.
"Susan, you really beat me! How do you manage to dig up so many oddballs at your company?" Isabella's voice was practically on fire.
"What now?" Susan asked, totally caught off guard.
"It's that guy you set me up with. First date, and he starts getting all touchy. I blocked him right away, but then he shows up at my job, saying he's super into me and wants to take me to his place right then and there!" Isabella was shaking with rage by the end.
"Is he for real?" Susan was floored. How could someone be like that?
"Of course, he's a total creep!" Isabella yelled.
"But he's always so proper at the office." Susan couldn't wrap her head around it. How could someone so diligent at work be such a weirdo in private?
"Alright, no more setups from you. I'll find someone on my own. My heart can't take this anymore." And with that, Isabella hung up.
Susan was bummed out for a while and came to a conclusion that people who were left behind had their reasons. She decided never to set Isabella up with any of these leftover guys again; who knew what they were like behind closed doors.
With no more matchmaking duties, Susan started focusing on her online store after work. She'd really let it slide lately, what with her two kids and Seb taking up all her time.
One evening, Seb came home from work.
Kathy took Seb's briefcase. He looked around the living room and saw Mary playing with Spring and Hayden, but no sign of Susan. He asked, puzzled, "Where's Susan?"
"Ms. Wilson is upstairs," Kathy replied.
Seb walked over, patted Hayden and Spring on the head, and then headed upstairs.
Opening the door to the guest bedroom, Seb saw Susan kneeling on the floor, busy packing parcels. The floor was a mess of packages and shipping labels, and he couldn't help but frown.
"You're back to running your online store?" Seb's voice had a hint of annoyance.
"Yeah," Susan replied, glancing up briefly before getting back to work.
Seb loosened his tie and squatted down, trying to be patient. "Can you stop with the online store? You barely have time for me and the kids after work, and now you're spending it on this."
Susan looked up and smiled. "Sorry, these orders are urgent today. Next time, I'll wait until Hayden and Spring are asleep to pack."
Seeing she wasn't budging, Seb's face turned serious. "Why are you working so hard?"
"To make money," Susan said with a grin.
"Isn't our life good now? Why do you need so much money?" Seb asked, genuinely puzzled.
"To buy a house. I want to buy a house of my own," Susan replied with a smile, her hands never stopping.
"What kind of house do you want? What's your budget? I'll have my secretary transfer the money to your account right away," Seb said, pulling out his phone to make a call.
Hearing this, Susan frowned, then stood up and looked Seb in the eye. "I know you’ve got money, but I want to buy a house with my own hustle."
"How about this villa? If you like it, I'll put it in your name right now. It’ll be all yours," Seb said, holding Susan's shoulders.
"Why don’t you get it, Seb? I know you’d give me anything, but that’s not earned by myself," Susan said.
"Does it really matter?" Seb asked, still not getting it.
Susan walked to the window and stared out. "You don’t know what my childhood was like. My dad ditched us. My mom had to scrape by with odd jobs and help from relatives to raise Dorothy and me. We always felt insecure, scared we wouldn’t have food for the next meal, and watched our mom cry helplessly."
Susan's shoulders started to shake, and tears rolled down her cheeks.
Seb's face grew serious as he walked up and hugged her from behind, wiping her tears with his thumb. "Let me take care of you from now on. I won’t let you suffer anymore," he said softly.
Hearing Seb's words, Susan felt a warmth in her heart but still shook her head. "No, I need to learn to rely on myself. That way, I’ll never feel insecure."
"Are you afraid I’ll change my mind?" Seb asked, stroking her hair gently.
Susan smiled and then leaned into Seb's chest, her hand on his chest. "Seb, they say love is forever, but I don’t buy that."
"Do you not trust me?" Seb asked, eager to explain.
Susan covered his mouth with her hand and looked up at him. "Yes, I do, but I just see love differently."
Seb stared at her, listening closely.
"A guy might love a girl for a few years, ten years, or even decades, but loving her for a lifetime? That’s a stretch for me," Susan said with a smile.
Seb opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words.
Susan continued, "There are so many reasons for falling out of love. A guy might find flaws in a girl he can’t stand, or he might fall for someone else. Changes in status, position, and environment might make him not appreciate the girl he once loved. Same goes for girls loving guys. My dad probably loved my mom at first, but when he met Sophia, he loved her and ditched my mom."
"And you, you can’t say you never loved Cynthia. You probably loved her deeply. Do you still love her now?" Susan asked, her eyes playfully looking at Seb.
"I can’t argue with what you’re saying, but I still believe in forever love," Seb said, his smile a bit forced.
"That’s why a woman’s gotta be able to support herself and her kids. Putting everything on a guy is too risky. This is a lesson I’ve learned from my own experiences. So I want to buy a house myself. If you ever stop loving me, the kids and I will still have a place to stay," Susan said, her eyes full of determination.
