Chapter 424 Still Annoyed
The call cut off just like that.
Susan felt a pang of guilt; she’d totally misjudged him.
Seb put a hand on her shoulder and asked, "Can you clear my name now?"
Susan looked up, eyes questioning, "Why didn’t you tell me your dad was in deep trouble? Why keep all this from me?"
Even though there was nothing shady between him and Maya, Susan still felt bummed out. He never shared his problems, always choosing to deal with them solo.
Seb frowned, his fingers running through her hair. "My dad’s situation is a mess. The other side wants to ruin him and our family. If he can’t clear his name, my mom and I are in deep too. I held off on the remarriage to protect you and the kids. Even if the Anderson family goes down, you and Spring won’t be dragged into it."
Susan saw the care in his eyes but wasn’t buying it.
"So, you held off the remarriage to keep me out of it?" Her eyes flashed with resentment.
His secrecy had her overthinking for days, leaving her sad and upset. It was unbearable.
Seeing her resentment, Seb quickly said, "It’s all on me. I’m sorry!"
Feeling agitated, Susan pushed his hand away, turned her back, and said, "Seb, you always do this. You say you don’t want to drag me down, but do you know how helpless that makes me feel? People in love should face things together, not push each other away. You don’t see me as the most important person in your life!"
Seb grabbed her shoulders, making her face him, and urgently explained, "You are the most important person in my life. I can’t stand to see you suffer with me. Doubt anything, but don’t doubt my love for you!"
Susan looked up, seeing his eyes fixed on her, deep and dark, with a hint of anxiety. It was clear his eyes held only her.
In the end, it was her own lack of confidence and trust in him that made her suspicious. She was at fault too.
Susan looked out the window and suddenly said, "Dorothy and Henry got divorced because Henry found someone new."
Suddenly hearing such a random and contextless statement, Seb thought she was overthinking again.
"Dorothy and Henry aren’t us. Maybe you’ve been overthinking. Even if all the men in the world cheat, I won’t, because I can’t love anyone else." Seb was sweating, trying to win her back.
"Actually, I envy Henry and Hailey," Susan suddenly said.
Seb frowned.
Susan continued, "Hailey’s personality is a lot like mine used to be—fearless and believing in love. When Dorothy publicly hit and scolded her, she didn’t care. When Dorothy wouldn’t let up, she and Henry held each other tightly, enduring Dorothy’s abuse together because she wanted to face everything with Henry, sharing both good and bad times."
Seb stared at Susan, totally lost on what she was getting at.
"Even though Henry and Hailey's actions were kinda shady, their ability to face everything together, through thick and thin, is really touching," Susan said.
Seb grabbed her shoulders and nodded. "I get it. From now on, no more secrets. We’ll face everything together, deal?"
But Susan shot back, "No!"
Seb was stunned.
Susan vented, "Last time when Hayden was sick, you didn’t tell me. Do you know how guilty I feel when I see Hayden now? And now, your dad’s in trouble, and you still kept me in the dark. Seb, you take on all the crap alone without thinking about my feelings."
"I know I messed up. How about you punish me? I’ll take whatever you dish out," Seb said, grabbing her hand.
This time, Susan steeled herself. With tears in her eyes, she pulled her hand back and said, "I don’t have time to punish you. I’m outta here."
She grabbed her bag and turned to leave.
"Susan!" Seb tried to stop her.
But Susan had already opened the office door. Outside stood the secretary, Katherine, and a bunch of people with documents, ready to report to Seb.
Susan turned and said, "Derek’s innocent. Stop all actions against him immediately."
Then she turned and quickly left.
Seb frowned and followed her.
"Mr. Anderson, are you heading out?" Katherine quickly stepped forward.
The others waiting also moved in, looking at Seb’s back. "Mr. Anderson, we have important documents for you to sign!"
Without looking back, Seb said, "Cancel all my appointments for today. I’ve got personal stuff to handle!"
Katherine and the others exchanged confused looks. Why was Seb, who always put work first, acting so weird today? Who was that woman just leaving? And what about the important documents?
Susan got into the elevator and hit the close button fast.
Seb ran over, but the doors shut quickly. He looked helplessly at Susan inside.
Standing in the elevator, Susan felt awful too. She wanted to let him in but steeled herself and ignored him.
If she didn’t teach him a lesson this time, he’d keep doing the same thing. She didn’t want to go through that heartache again. She wanted them to face everything together, no matter what, but he just didn’t get it.
The elevator reached the first floor, and Susan stepped out.
As she walked out of the building’s lobby and down the steps, a familiar voice called out from behind. "Susan!"
