Chapter 278 Nature

When Susan got to the hospital, Michelle was already in the morgue.

Susan hugged the crying Isabella and said, "Michelle's gone, but you need to stay strong. She wouldn't want to see you like this."

Isabella, still sobbing, clung to Susan. "I knew this day would come because she was sick for so long. But what really hurts is my heartless brother, Eugene Brown. My mom raised him, but he didn't care for her. Now she's gone, and he says he's too busy to help. Can you believe that? My mom just wanted to see him one last time."

Isabella kept crying.

"He's awful. Don't waste your tears on him. Right now, we need to focus on Michelle's funeral. Stay strong, okay? Michelle's final journey depends on you," Susan reassured her.

"I know, Susan. Please help me. I'm so lost," Isabella said, gripping Susan's hand.

"Don't worry, I'll be here with you," Susan promised.

Susan kept her word. The priority was arranging Michelle's funeral. Moving out of George's house could wait. Luckily, Serenity was looking after Spring, giving Susan time to help Isabella.

Three days later, with Susan's help, Isabella took Michelle's urn back to their hometown for burial.

Isabella covered all the costs for medical bills, cremation, and burial. Eugene only showed up at the grave, dressed in white, crying dramatically.

Susan, Isabella, and other relatives watched coldly, not comforting him. They saw Eugene and his wife, Patricia Gonzalez, acting like fools.

After the funeral, Susan and Isabella were about to leave.

Unexpectedly, Eugene and Patricia blocked their way.

"What do you want?" Isabella's voice was weak and hoarse from crying.

"What do I want? You think you can just bury Michelle and be done? You owe us an explanation," Patricia snapped, hands on her hips.

"Explain what? The hospital and cremation costs? Are you going to pay? Fine, Isabella, show them the receipts and tell them what they owe!" Susan shouted at Eugene and Patricia, furious.

Susan was livid. Eugene and Patricia hadn't cared for Michelle at all, and now they were causing trouble.

Patricia retorted, "Who do you think you are, coming here and yelling?"

Isabella pulled Susan aside and faced Patricia. "What do you want? I'm busy and don't have time for this."

"Michelle had some money, gold earrings, and a necklace. You can't keep it all. Hand it over so you and Eugene can split it!" Patricia demanded arrogantly.

Susan rolled her eyes. They didn't care when Michelle was sick, but now they wanted her stuff.

Isabella's eyes filled with sadness. She sneered, "Do you know how much Mom's treatment cost? Those few thousand dollars were nothing. Eugene, Mom gave you everything—life, a house, a wedding. Did you ever take care of her or contribute to her medical expenses? You didn't even handle her funeral, and now you want her money? Have you no sense of decency?"

Eugene faltered, unable to defend himself. Patricia interjected, "Isabella, what about the money Michelle spent on your education? Eugene didn't go to school. Now you're successful and earning a lot. You should've taken care of Michelle. Eugene couldn't even if he wanted to."

Isabella shot a cold gaze at Patricia. "Eugene chose not to go to school. Yes, I went to college, but I worked part-time and took out loans. Mom helped, but I covered most of it. Now that Mom's gone, I'm done with you. Let's pretend we were never even related."

Isabella pulled Susan away.

Patricia, greedy as ever, wasn't letting go. "Oh, now that you're successful, you don't recognize us? Fine, but hand over Michelle's gold jewelry!"

Susan had enough. "How dare you? Michelle's jewelry was bought by Isabella. It belongs to her!" she shouted.

"Who are you to butt in?" Patricia pushed Susan.

Susan wasn't backing down. She kicked Patricia, and Eugene stepped in to defend his wife.

Isabella quickly joined the fight.

But they were no match for Eugene and Patricia. A man could easily handle two women, and they were losing.

Isabella looked around, then ran to Michelle's grave, crying and shouting, "Mom, they’re hitting me! Everyone, come see! They didn't take care of my mom when she was alive, and now they're hitting me after she's gone. How does any of this make sense?"

Isabella's cries worked. Relatives who hadn't gone far heard her and quickly returned.
