Chapter 1200 Shock

Upon hearing Douglas's words, Cecilia knew there must be a reason, so she frowned and asked, "What are you trying to say?"

He replied, "Actually, Mr. Fields canceled his wedding with Miss Tate because of you."

She sneered, "I remember he disappeared for a few days after canceling the wedding, right? At that time, I was pregnant, and he didn't show up. He didn't even appear when I had a miscarriage after being hit by a car. Douglas, I know you're trying to get me and Daryl back together, but you can't make up excuses like that. I'm not a fool. Just because you say something, do you think I'll believe it?"

Cecilia found his words unbelievable.

Douglas said emphatically, "Miss Thorne, you've known me for so long. When have I ever lied? I genuinely want to reconcile you and Mr. Fields, but I also believe in being truthful and would never deceive you. Mr. Fields had his reasons for not being by your side back then."

"What reasons?" she asked expressionlessly.

Cecilia knew Douglas to some extent. He was steady and honest, and he wasn't the type to lie.

"This has to be explained from the beginning. Mr. Fields was forced to get engaged to Miss Tate," Douglas said.

Cecilia looked at Douglas incredulously and then said, "Impossible. Daryl and Skylar grew up together. They were together from a very young age!"

"Mr. Fields and Miss Tate indeed grew up together, and, indeed, Miss Tate has always had a crush on Mr. Fields, but Mr. Fields never dated Miss Tate," he clarified.

Cecilia opened her mouth but was momentarily speechless.

It seemed like Daryl had said the same thing a few days ago. Could it be that he and Douglas had coordinated their stories?

Douglas said, "You could say that Miss Tate has always been pursuing Mr. Fields unilaterally, and Mr. Fields has never had feelings for her. When she went to Northstar City to find him, Mr. Fields didn't know in advance. When his father was suddenly hospitalized, Mr. Fields returned to Maple Valley to take over the family business."

"The Fields Group's stock took a nosedive, and it was Miss Tate's father who stepped in at a critical moment to stabilize the situation. The Tates took the opportunity to propose a marriage alliance to the Fields family. Mr. Fields's mother agreed to the marriage without consulting Mr. Fields. At that time, Mr. Fields's father's condition had just stabilized, leaving Mr. Fields with no choice but to accept the engagement."

Cecilia couldn't help but frown.

"If you don't believe me, you can check the Fields Group's stock prices to see if I'm telling the truth," Douglas added, noticing Cecilia's doubts.

"Mr. Fields has always loved only you. However, he misunderstood you at the time, which is why he got engaged to Miss Tate without considering your feelings. When he realized it was a misunderstanding, he broke off the engagement with Miss Tate on the wedding day."

"Because of this, Mr. Fields offended the Tate family, who then caused a lot of trouble for the Fields Group and him. Mr. Fields's parents also pressured him, but Mr. Fields remained steadfast and refused to continue the engagement, hoping that one day he could be with you again."

Cecilia frowned and asked, "If that's the case, why didn't he visit me even once when I was hospitalized after the miscarriage? Why is he only thinking of making amends now? Where was he when I needed him the most?"

As she asked these questions, her eyes turned red, and the painful memories seemed to resurface. She remembered how much she had suffered back then.

Douglas answered, "Actually, Mr. Fields has always been concerned about you. When the accident happened, Mr. Fields rushed to the hospital immediately and took care of you all night. He left quietly the next morning when you woke up. There were countless times he sat in his car, looking at you from a distance. During the six months after your miscarriage, he was in great pain. But for your safety and your future together, he had to suppress his longing for you."

Cecilia became even more confused. "What do you mean? For my safety and our future?"

"When Mr. Fields broke off the engagement with the Tate family, it caused a lot of negative impact, and the Tate family was furious. Mr. Fields had to avoid seeing you temporarily. Later, the Tate family used many tactics to force him to comply, but he remained true to his feelings. In this situation, Mr. Fields couldn't let anyone know that he loved you. If he did, you would become the target of everyone's anger. The Tate family wouldn't spare you, and the elders of the Fields family would hate you. In that case, Mr. Fields's parents would never agree to you marrying into the Fields family. So, Mr. Fields had to wait until things calmed down before he could explain everything to you."

Cecilia was stunned. She recalled everything from the past. No wonder Daryl ignored her for six months; he had been under so much pressure. It was no surprise that he had recently started approaching her again, explaining what had happened and saying he had always loved her.

Seeing Cecilia in a daze, Douglas continued, "When Mr. Fields went to find you again, he didn't expect you to have already given up on him. He wanted to pursue you again, but the process was extremely difficult. You refused to listen to his explanations, but he never gave up, believing that one day you would understand his good intentions. However, he didn't expect you to have Barry by your side now. This was a huge blow to Mr. Fields, especially after you returned that brooch."

"Mr. Fields realized he couldn't win you back, so he stopped caring about his health. This time, he got into a car accident after getting drunk, and fortunately, it didn't have serious consequences. But if this continues, I'm afraid something worse will happen to him sooner or later!"

Cecilia couldn't process all the information Douglas had given her at once, but knowing that Daryl was in a bad situation made her feel very conflicted.

"I don't think I can help him," Cecilia said, picking up her purse to leave.

Douglas quickly stood up and said, "Miss Thorne, I don't expect you to get back together with Mr. Fields. After all, feelings can't be forced. But I hope you can consider his deep affection for you, persuading him to take care of his health and not do anything foolish. I think he will listen to you."

Cecilia looked at Douglas for a moment, neither agreeing nor refusing. "My mind is a bit confused. I'll go back first."
