Chapter 112 The Contest
"Work's important, but you gotta take care of yourself too. How about dinner at my place tonight? Kathy's cooking is awesome, and I've picked up a few recipes myself," Cynthia warmly suggested.
"Maybe another time. I have plans tonight," Seb replied coldly.
"Seb," Cynthia started to say more.
Seb cut her off, "I gotta go. Talk later."
He hung up.
Looking at the busy traffic outside the car window, Seb impatiently said, "Drive faster."
Leon, in the front, replied, "Mr. Anderson, it's Friday rush hour. Too many cars; we can't speed up."
Seb frowned.
He felt an urge to fly straight to the suburban villa. Was he missing Hayden, or did he also want to see Susan, who was taking care of Hayden? He couldn't figure it out.
Half an hour later, the Bentley stopped in front of the villa.
Leon opened the back door, and Seb headed straight inside.
In the living room, Seb saw Mary playing with Hayden on the sofa.
"Mr. Anderson, you're back?" Mary stood up to greet him.
Seb looked around, his face darkening. "Weren't you sick?"
Mary replied guiltily, "I had a bad cold and didn't want to infect Hayden. I'm better now, so I came back this afternoon. Ms. Wilson took great care of Hayden while I was away. When I got here, Hayden didn't want her to leave. She only left when he fell asleep."
Seb frowned, looking a bit disappointed. Mary stood there awkwardly, unsure if she had said something wrong.
"Daddy," Hayden called out, smiling.
Seb's expression softened as he picked up Hayden.
Hayden's chubby hands patted Seb's cheeks, and Seb's mood gradually improved.
Two days later, during lunch break, Susan and Isabella met at a nearby restaurant.
As they were finishing, Isabella noticed Susan seemed distracted. "Hey, what's up with you today? You seem out of it."
"I don't know. I haven't been eating or sleeping well," Susan said, putting down her utensils.
"Are you in love again?" Isabella asked, surprised.
"Get outta here. How many love affairs do you think I have?" Susan rolled her eyes.
"Then what's wrong?" Isabella asked, curious.
Susan told Isabella everything that had happened recently. "Every time I close my eyes, all I can think about is Hayden. I don't know what's going on. What should I do?"
Isabella thought for a moment. "Isn't it strange that your child passed away, and Seb immediately adopted one from an orphanage? It feels odd to me."
Isabella's words hit Susan like a lightbulb moment. "I feel the same way, but he had a plausible explanation. I don't know whether to believe him."
"Are you serious? You can check with the orphanage. Adopting a kid involves formal procedures," Isabella said.
"Yeah, but I don't know which orphanage Seb adopted Hayden from," Susan said, frustrated.
Isabella thought for a moment. "Do you think Mary, who takes care of Hayden, might know?"
"She's been with Hayden all along. I'll ask her sometime. Honestly, I miss Hayden a lot," Susan said after thinking it over.
"Susan, you're in deep. Seb had you wrapped around his finger, and now his son has you thinking about him day and night. If they team up, what should you do?" Isabella teased.
"Always making fun of me. I'd like to see who sweeps you off your feet," Susan rolled her eyes.
"Probably hasn't been born yet!" Isabella laughed.
A moment later, they finished their meal and left the restaurant.
After a few steps, Susan saw a familiar figure ahead.
Cynthia also saw Susan, and their eyes met briefly.
Susan turned away, not wanting to deal with Cynthia.
"Just my luck, running into the mistress while out for a meal!" Isabella sneered loudly.
Cynthia walked over, glaring at Isabella. "Whose dog got loose and is running around biting people?"
"Who are you calling a dog?" Isabella snapped, pointing at Cynthia.
"I didn't even mention your name, yet you took it personally?" Cynthia said provocatively.
"What did you say?" Isabella, with her fiery temper, was ready to fight.
Susan quickly pulled Isabella back. "Forget it. Why bother with her?"
Cynthia was furious. "What, bullying me because you have more people?"
"So what if we are?" Isabella stepped forward and pushed Cynthia.
"You dare hit me?" Cynthia, not backing down, stepped forward to hit Isabella.
Susan, not wanting Isabella to get hurt, stepped in front of her and said to Cynthia, "This started because of me. If you have a problem, take it out on me. Don't involve innocent people!"
"Susan, I didn't expect you to be so loyal. Fine, I'll settle this with you. You and Seb are divorced. I warn you not to cling to him anymore, or you'll regret it!" Cynthia glared at Susan.
Susan wasn't angered by Cynthia's accusation. Instead, she coldly smiled and said, "I want to ask you, what's your relationship with Seb now? Are you married? What right do you have to warn me?"
Cynthia was momentarily speechless, then raised her chin and said, "I'm Seb's girlfriend. That's enough to warn you."
"Then you should go back and constraint Seb. Don't let him go around messing with women. It's like you have a dog that you can't control, and it bites people. Shouldn't you be the one to manage it?" Susan said coldly.
